The call

Acuité's license protects it from AI substitutes and new entrants, but it remains a smaller player in a market three bigger rivals dominate.

Acuite assigns credit ratings to small and medium Indian businesses, following government rules set by banking regulators. It's hard to replace because Indian law requires ratings to come from a licensed company like Acuite, not from a computer program or AI tool alone. Even bigger rating firms like CRISIL could move into Acuite's market, but they choose not to because smaller business ratings don't make as much money. The one thing that could change everything: starting in 2027, the government will publish actual default rates for each rating company, so if Acuite's ratings turn out to be wrong more often than its competitors' ratings, customers will switch away, and its license won't save it.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI/ML credit-scoring tools. AI can automate ratio analysis and benchmarking but can't issue a rating opinion banks need under Basel III rules. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: CRISIL, ICRA, CARE. These three hold roughly 80% of India's ratings revenue and could push into the SME tier Acuité serves, but haven't moved yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. SEBI registration and RBI ECAI accreditation give Acuité a license that unlicensed AI scores and new entrants can't get.
What would change this call
RBI publishes comparative Observed Default Rates by CRA under the ODR framework from April 1, 2027. Would show whether Acuité's rated defaults run worse than CRISIL, ICRA and CARE.
Outcome of Acuité's appeal against the SEBI promoter-conflict fine. Would show whether regulatory scrutiny of Acuité is intensifying or settled.
CRISIL or ICRA launching a dedicated SME/MSME rating push into Acuité's niche. Would show a large incumbent moving down-market to compete for Acuité's core segment.

Questions people ask
Is Acuité Ratings & Research profitable?
No audited revenue figures are publicly confirmed for Acuité. It operates on the standard issuer-pays credit rating model used by Indian CRAs and holds RBI ECAI accreditation as of January 9, 2023, but third-party financial estimates are inconsistent and unverified aggregator data, so profitability cannot be confirmed from public sources.
Could AI replace Acuité Ratings & Research?
Unlikely for its core function. Basel III and SEBI rules require a licensed CRA opinion for bank capital-adequacy purposes, something an unlicensed AI score cannot substitute for. AI can automate analyst tasks like ratio analysis, but as of 2026 no rule lets AI-only output replace a regulated rating.
Who owns Acuité Ratings & Research?
As of April 2025 shareholding data, SIDBI holds about 35.73%, Dun & Bradstreet Information Services India holds about 35.73%, and ICICI Bank holds about 7.71%. Acuité is privately held with no public listing or disclosed VC funding round.
Who is Acuité's biggest competitor?
CRISIL, majority-owned by S&P Global, is the dominant Indian credit rating agency; CRISIL, ICRA and CARE together held roughly 80% of India's rating-revenue market share per a 2017 academic study, leaving Acuité as a smaller, SME-focused player among seven SEBI-registered CRAs as of April 2026.
Is Acuité Ratings & Research a safe company to join?
Acuité is a certified Great Place to Work per that organization's listing, and holds durable regulatory accreditation (RBI ECAI status confirmed January 2023) that supports business continuity. Headcount estimates from data brokers range widely (roughly 200 to 375), so exact staffing trends are unconfirmed.
Has Acuité had any regulatory trouble?
Yes. In 2024, SEBI fined Acuité INR 5 lakh for rating borrowers connected to its own promoters, a conflict-of-interest violation; Acuité contested the fine, saying the regulation was misinterpreted, per a 2026-07-20 report.
