The call

Aegean keeps its Athens hub firmly under control while betting new capital on India routes where IndiGo already flies and fuel costs are biting.

Aegean Airlines runs most flights in and out of Athens and makes steady profit from Greek domestic routes and European connections. It is hard for competitors to copy because Athens airport has limited takeoff and landing slots, the government pays Aegean to serve small islands, and Star Alliance airlines feed it customers. However, Aegean is spending billions to start long-haul flights to India, and IndiGo, a huge budget carrier from India, already started flying that route in early 2026 with a new fuel-efficient plane, which means Aegean's India bet may not make the money the company expects. The picture changes if India flights fail to fill seats while a cheaper Greek rival called Sky Express keeps stealing Athens airport share at the same time, because then Aegean loses both its growth story and its core profit engine.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI travel-planning agents (Google Gemini, ChatGPT flight search, OTA AI tools). AI booking agents could route travelers to cheapest fare across carriers, weakening direct-booking and loyalty ties over time. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: IndiGo. IndiGo launched Athens-India A321XLR service in January 2026, beating Aegean to a corridor central to its own €4B long-haul expansion. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Slot scarcity and PSO contracts lock in Athens hub dominance and domestic routes that low-cost rivals cannot easily replicate.
What would change this call
Aegean's H1 2026 results (due Sept 11, 2026) show India route load factors versus IndiGo. Would show whether the €4B India expansion is gaining traction or losing to IndiGo.
Sky Express's Athens hub share crosses 25-30% in airport traffic reports. Would show Aegean's domestic hub moat eroding faster than expected.
Aegean reports a second consecutive quarterly net loss after Q1 2026's €21.7M loss. Would show fuel/FX pressure and India costs are outweighing core hub profits.

Questions people ask
Is Aegean Airlines profitable in 2026?
Aegean posted FY2025 net profit of €147.8 million on €1.86 billion revenue (up 14% YoY), but Q1 2026 swung to a €21.7 million net loss, widened from €6.6 million in Q1 2025, due to jet-fuel costs and FX losses, per its May 19, 2026 trading update.
Who owns Aegean Airlines?
Aegean Airlines is publicly listed on the Athens Exchange (ticker AEGN). Businessman Theodoros Vassilakis holds majority control, with his stake rising from 34.17% to 39.80% per a Euronext Athens filing; other blocks are held by Alnesco Enterprises, Siana Enterprises, and Achilleas Konstantakopoulos.
What is Aegean Airlines' biggest competitor?
Domestically, Sky Express is the fastest-growing rival, holding roughly 20% share at Athens International Airport versus Aegean's 44% as of December 27, 2025, and named ERA Airline of the Year in November 2025. On long-haul India routes, IndiGo beat Aegean to market in January 2026.
Could AI replace Aegean Airlines' operations?
No. Aegean's core moats are Athens hub slots (~44% share), PSO domestic contracts, Star Alliance codeshare, and EASA/HCAA certificates, none of which AI can replicate. AI is used only at the edges, via an Oracle Cloud CX and Unity CDP marketing rollout completed by March 2025.
Is Aegean Airlines' India expansion succeeding?
It is contested. Aegean launched Athens-New Delhi on March 17, 2026 and Athens-Mumbai on May 2, 2026, part of a €4.0 billion, 60-aircraft program through 2031, but rival IndiGo already launched its own Mumbai-Athens and Delhi-Athens A321XLR service on January 24, 2026, beating Aegean to the corridor.
How much market share does Aegean Airlines have at Athens airport?
Aegean holds roughly 44% of traffic share at Athens International Airport as of December 27, 2025, well ahead of Sky Express (~20%) and Ryanair (~4.5%), according to ekathimerini reporting on low-cost carrier growth in Greece.
