The call

Ahrefs stays profitable and independent on its own data, while its core click-based SEO business faces slow erosion from AI answers and a newly Adobe-backed Semrush.

Ahrefs crawls the web to sell SEO professionals data about keywords, backlinks, and competitor strategies. It is hard to copy because Google has ruled itself out (its ad business conflicts with helping SEO), but Adobe just bought Semrush in April 2026 and is now shipping a competing product with real resources behind it. The company survives either way, but whether it grows depends on whether new AI-visibility tools make up for the traffic that Google's AI summaries are stealing from traditional search results.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google AI Overviews / AI Mode. AI answers cut organic clicks that justified SEO subscriptions, pushing Ahrefs to sell AI-visibility tracking instead. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Adobe (via Semrush, acquired April 2026). Adobe now owns Semrush, giving a well-funded rival direct distribution into Ahrefs' enterprise SEO customer base. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A 15-year proprietary crawl and backlink index that's costly and slow for any rival to rebuild from scratch.
What would change this call
Adobe bundles Semrush into Creative Cloud/Experience Cloud enterprise deals within 12 months of the April 2026 close. Would show Adobe using distribution to pull enterprise SEO seats from Ahrefs.
Ahrefs reports or leaks enterprise customer losses to Semrush in trade press within a year. Would confirm the Adobe/Semrush threat is converting into real share loss.
Ahrefs' Brand Radar/AI-visibility revenue growth versus legacy SEO subscription ARR trend over next 12-18 months. Would show whether AI-visibility revenue offsets click-based SEO demand decline.

Questions people ask
Is Ahrefs profitable in 2026?
Ahrefs has never taken outside VC funding or debt, reportedly turning down Sequoia-tier investment offers, and third-party estimates put ARR near $149M in 2024, per seowebster.com (2026-02-19). Full audited profit figures are not public, but 100% bootstrapped survival for 15 years implies sustained profitability.
Who owns Ahrefs?
Ahrefs Pte Ltd is privately owned by founder Dmytro Gerasymenko, who has taken $0 in outside funding and has no board of directors, per vulcanpost.com (2025-09-18). He has publicly stated a no-board, no-exit-plan stance as of 2026-05-23.
Could AI replace Ahrefs?
AI agents can partially automate keyword and backlink lookups, but cannot cheaply rebuild Ahrefs' 15-year proprietary web crawl and index. Instead, Ahrefs shipped an MCP server (October 2025) and a free Domain Rating API for AI agents (June 2026), feeding its data into AI tools rather than being replaced by them.
Is Ahrefs losing customers to Semrush?
No confirmed customer losses are documented as of mid-2026, but Adobe closed its $1.9B acquisition of Semrush, Ahrefs' largest direct rival, on April 28, 2026, giving Semrush new enterprise distribution and resources that could pressure Ahrefs' market position.
Is Ahrefs a safe company to join?
Headcount estimates vary by tracker: 143 employees per getlatka.com (2026-07-02) versus 204 per crustdata.com (2026-06-20), suggesting noisy reporting rather than confirmed layoffs. The founder targets a deliberately lean team with roughly $1M ARR per employee, not rapid headcount growth.
What is Ahrefs' biggest competitor?
Semrush is Ahrefs' closest direct competitor and is now owned by Adobe after a $1.9B acquisition that closed April 28, 2026. Google is an indirect competitor via AI Overviews, which erode the click-based SEO demand Ahrefs' core business depends on.
