The call

Alibaba Cloud sells AI to China instead of getting replaced by it, protected by Beijing's rules against foreign clouds and Huawei not yet closing the gap.

Alibaba Cloud rents computing power and data storage to businesses in China, and it also builds artificial intelligence tools like the Qwen model. It is hard to replace because Chinese law requires data to stay inside China, which keeps American cloud companies like Amazon Web Services out, and because Alibaba's own customers have been locked into its system for many years. The main risk is Huawei Cloud, which is owned by a rival Chinese company and bundles its own AI model and computer chips together, though it has not yet stolen much of Alibaba's business. The biggest change would be if China's government picks Huawei Cloud or another company as the official cloud for banks and hospitals instead.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Alibaba owns the frontier model (Qwen) and the chip (Zhenwu M890), so AI growth feeds cloud revenue instead of eating it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Huawei Cloud. Huawei bundles Ascend chips with Pangu models and holds 18-19% share, but it is not yet pulling customers away from Alibaba. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. China's data laws keep AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud out, and 9+ years of enterprise workflow lock-in keep customers from switching to Huawei.
What would change this call
Huawei Cloud gains absolute China market share over two straight quarters. Would show Ascend chip plus Pangu bundling is pulling customers from Alibaba.
Pentagon 1260H injunction hearing outcome, mid-August 2026. Would show whether US legal action starts restricting Alibaba's global operations.
FY2027 Q1 earnings, mid-August 2026, on capex versus AI revenue growth. Would show whether heavy AI spending keeps converting into sustained triple-digit revenue growth.
Key numbers
  • Cloud revenue $6.04B, up 38% YoY (Q4 FY2026, May 2026)
  • AI product revenue up triple digits for 11th straight quarter (Q4 FY2026, May 2026)
  • 38-40% share of China's AI cloud market (2025)
Named risks
  • Pentagon 1260H designation and pending litigation could restrict US business dealings. Severity: high
  • Rising AI/cloud capex ($53bn to possibly $69bn) pressuring free cash flow and group net income. Severity: high
  • US export controls on advanced AI chips constraining compute supply. Severity: medium
  • Escalating Anthropic distillation dispute affecting AI coding tool access and reputation. Severity: medium
  • Geopolitical exclusion from US and allied markets limiting global cloud expansion. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Alibaba Cloud profitable in 2026?
Yes at the segment level. Alibaba's Cloud Intelligence Group posted segment adjusted EBITA of RMB3,796 million (about $550 million), up 57% year over year, in the quarter ended March 31, 2026, even as heavy AI capex compressed group-wide net income that quarter.
Could AI replace Alibaba Cloud's business?
No, AI is fueling growth rather than replacing it. Alibaba's AI-related product revenue logged its 11th consecutive quarter of triple-digit year-over-year growth and reached about 30% of Cloud's external revenue in the quarter ended March 31, 2026.
Who owns Alibaba Cloud?
Alibaba Cloud is wholly owned by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, listed as NYSE/HKEX ticker BABA/9988. It operates internally as the Cloud Intelligence Group reporting segment and is not a separately traded entity as of July 2026.
Who is Alibaba Cloud's biggest competitor?
Domestically it is Huawei Cloud, which held about 18 to 19% of the Mainland China cloud market as of January 2026 versus Alibaba's 33 to 40%. Foreign hyperscalers like AWS, Azure and Google Cloud are largely locked out by China's data-sovereignty law.
What is Alibaba Cloud's market share in China?
Estimates for 2025 range from 33 to 34% (Canalys, quarterly) up to 38.1% to 40.1% in the AI/full-stack cloud segment specifically, per Omdia and Frost & Sullivan, as reported through July 2026.
Is Alibaba Cloud facing US legal or regulatory risk?
Yes. The Pentagon added Alibaba to its 1260H 'Chinese military company' list on June 8, 2026, barring DoD contracts. Alibaba sued the Department of Defense on June 23, 2026, and won a temporary reprieve from a lobbying ban on July 5, 2026.
