The call

Databricks sits between every cloud and every AI model a company uses, collecting revenue from both sides while growing faster than public rival Snowflake.

Databricks is a software company that helps businesses organize and analyze their data no matter which cloud provider (Amazon, Google, Microsoft, etc.) they use. It is hard to copy because Microsoft and Amazon would have to let their own customers choose Databricks over them, which would hurt their own cloud sales, so they will not do it; Snowflake, its main competitor, is growing much slower (26% per year versus Databricks' 65-80% per year). The one thing that could change everything is if Microsoft starts giving away the same data-organizing features for free to companies already paying for Microsoft's cloud services, which would force Databricks to defend its value in a different way.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google plug into Databricks rather than replace it; the platform sells picks and shovels for AI, not a rival to it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft Fabric. Fabric is live inside Azure contracts and could be bundled free, but Databricks' growth has not bent in Azure-heavy accounts so far. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Unity Catalog gives customers one governance layer across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, something a single hyperscaler cannot offer without hurting its own cloud business.
What would change this call
Microsoft bundles Fabric governance features free into existing Azure contracts. would show hyperscaler undercutting Databricks on price inside its own moat.
Databricks' YoY growth rate in Azure-heavy or multi-cloud accounts visibly slows. would show Fabric or another hyperscaler tool is actually pulling workloads away.
Databricks discloses gross margin figures below the historical ~80% baseline. would show AI infrastructure costs are eroding profitability despite revenue growth.

  • Gross margin compression from rising AI infrastructure costs relative to historical ~80% margins. Severity: medium
  • Headcount and total funding figures conflict materially across sources, complicating scale assessment. Severity: low
  • Pending Panther acquisition still subject to regulatory clearance as of June 2026. Severity: low
  • Prolonged private status delays liquidity for employees and investors if IPO slips past 2027. Severity: medium
