The call

Apollo still sits inside major enterprise stacks, but shrinking headcount, silent fundraising, and a real rival copying its playbook put its next chapter in question.

Apollo GraphQL sells software that helps large companies like Walmart and Booking.com connect their different computer systems together using a standard called GraphQL Federation. The company built real, deep relationships with Fortune 500 customers, but two things are making that advantage weaker: a competitor called WunderGraph is selling a cheaper product that does the same job, and an industry group called the GraphQL Foundation is creating a free, open version of Apollo's main technology so anyone can copy it. The company is also smaller than it used to be and has not raised new money in four years, so what happens next depends on whether it can either get new funding, convince its big customers to stay loyal, or make money from a new artificial intelligence tool it is betting on.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI coding agents and MCP-based orchestration tools. AI agents need structured API access, so Apollo is betting its graph becomes the layer agents query, but this is unproven revenue so far. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: WunderGraph (Cosmo) and the GraphQL Foundation's Composite Schemas spec. Cosmo markets itself directly as an Apollo GraphOS replacement, while Composite Schemas threatens to make Apollo's proprietary federation directives unnecessary. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep, hard to rip out integrations at Walmart, PlayStation, Block, Booking.com and other Fortune 500 accounts running Apollo Federation in production.
What would change this call
Apollo announces (or fails to announce) a new funding round by mid-2027. Shows whether investors still back Apollo's valuation and AI pivot.
A Fortune 500 Apollo Federation customer publicly migrates to WunderGraph Cosmo or adopts Composite Schemas. Would confirm real enterprise defection, not just marketing claims.
Apollo headcount drops below 150 or further layoffs are reported. Indicates continued contraction and cost pressure despite AI pivot.

Questions people ask
Is Apollo GraphQL profitable in 2026?
Apollo GraphQL discloses no profitability figures. Third-party estimates put 2024 revenue near $35-37M ARR, but the company has not confirmed this. No funding round has been announced since its $130M Series D in August 2021, leaving its financial health unclear.
Has Apollo GraphQL raised any new funding recently?
No. Apollo GraphQL's last disclosed round was a $130M Series D in August 2021 led by Insight Partners at over a $1.5B valuation. As of mid-2026, more than four years have passed without a publicly announced new round.
Is Apollo GraphQL laying off employees?
Apollo GraphQL cut 15% of staff in December 2022. Headcount trackers show a peak of about 244 employees in January 2024 falling to roughly 156-173 by June 2026, a contraction of around 20% year over year.
Who is Apollo GraphQL's biggest competitor?
WunderGraph's Cosmo product is marketed explicitly as an Apollo GraphOS replacement claiming lower governance overhead, and the GraphQL Foundation's vendor-neutral Composite Schemas spec is maturing to erode Apollo Federation's proprietary lock-in, both as of 2026.
Could AI replace what Apollo GraphQL does?
Apollo is repositioning around AI: it shipped an MCP Server in May 2025 (reaching v1.0 in October 2025) and joined the Agentic AI Foundation in February 2026. But MCP is Anthropic's open protocol, not Apollo's own, so agents could route around GraphQL for new builds.
Who owns Apollo GraphQL?
Apollo GraphQL (legal entity Apollo Graph, Inc.) is privately held and venture-backed, with investors including Insight Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, and Matrix Partners from its August 2021 $130M Series D. It has not been acquired and has not filed for an IPO.
