The call

Aqua still holds real customers and real technology, but three layoff rounds, a co-founder exit, and no new capital in 2.5 years point to a company shrinking while its biggest rivals ship faster and get bigger.

Aqua Security sells software that watches and protects containers and cloud applications while they run, and has built a real customer base of large banks and government agencies that would be costly to switch away from. The problem is that two much bigger competitors have already released their own versions: Google bought Wiz for $32 billion and Palo Alto released its own platform, both in early 2026 before Aqua finished its answer. The company has cut its workforce by roughly one-third over the past year and lost a co-founder, which suggests leadership is bracing for a takeover rather than betting on independent growth. The one thing that could change this is if Google starts bundling Wiz free to all its cloud customers over the next couple of years, because that would make Aqua's products almost impossible to sell unless a customer is already locked into Amazon's cloud or needs special government approval.

Why
01
AI pressure: Palo Alto Cortex Cloud agentic platform. Cortex Cloud's autonomous patching shipped before Aqua's own agentic answer, Compass, arrived two months later. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google Cloud (via its $32B Wiz acquisition, closed March 2026). Google can bundle Wiz free with GCP spend, squeezing Aqua out of non-federal, non-AWS deals. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. FedRAMP High status and deep lock-in at top banks and Fortune 100 accounts that hyperscalers cannot easily enter.
What would change this call
Aqua headcount stabilizes or grows over next two quarters under CEO Mike Dube. Would show restructuring has ended and business is scaling again, not shrinking toward sale.
Aqua announces a fresh funding round at flat or higher valuation. Would show investors still see growth potential, not just runway-extension distress.
GCP begins bundling Wiz features into standard cloud pricing. Would show Aqua losing non-federal, non-AWS deals to free or discounted hyperscaler-native security.
Key numbers

Questions people ask
Is Aqua Security profitable in 2026?
Aqua Security has not disclosed audited profitability figures. Revenue estimates range widely from ~$60M to ~$202M depending on the source (IT-Harvest, Latka, ZoomInfo, StartupHub), and the company has undergone three-plus layoff rounds since 2024, suggesting cost-cutting toward profitability rather than confirmed profit as of mid-2026.
Has Aqua Security had layoffs?
Yes. Aqua Security cut about 10% of staff (roughly 67 people) in June-July 2024, laid off dozens more including about 20 in Israel in January 2025, and conducted a third round in December 2025 that brought headcount to roughly 360, down from a 2024 peak of about 882.
Could AI replace Aqua Security's product?
AI-native tools and hyperscaler bundles are commoditizing Aqua's core scanning and alert-triage functions. Aqua responded with Aqua Compass, an agentic AI remediation tool launched April 22, 2026, but this came after Palo Alto Networks' Cortex Cloud agentic platform (Feb 2026) and Orca Security's roadmap (March 2026), putting Aqua in a catch-up position.
Who is Aqua Security's biggest competitor?
Google Cloud, via its $32B acquisition of Wiz that closed March 11, 2026, and Palo Alto Networks with its Cortex Cloud Agentic Cloud Security Platform launched around February 25, 2026, are Aqua's two most dangerous rivals, both shipping competing agentic features before Aqua's April 2026 answer.
Who owns Aqua Security?
Aqua Security is privately held and venture-backed, not owned by a parent company. It last raised a $60M Series E extension in January 2024 led by Evolution Equity Partners at a valuation above $1B, following a 2021 $135M round led by ION Crossover Partners at the same $1B+ level.
Did Aqua Security's founders leave the company?
Yes. On November 6, 2025, co-founders Dror Davidoff (CEO) and Amir Jerbi (CTO) stepped down to advisory roles as Aqua Security announced a leadership transition, with Mike Dube, formerly of CrowdStrike and Check Point, becoming the new CEO.
