The call

Arbor keeps taking share from a collapsing SIMS while fending off Bromcom in court, with new PE owner Permira's next moves the thing to watch.

Arbor makes software that tracks student records, attendance, grades, and behavior for UK schools. It is hard to replace because schools depend on it for daily operations and legal compliance, and switching would disrupt thousands of schools. Bromcom is a smaller competitor trying to win over some customers, and SIMS (made by Capita) is much larger but stuck with old technology that costs more to maintain. The biggest uncertainty is whether the company's new private equity owner will make changes to pricing or products that push schools away, or whether lawsuits and the complicated move to new ownership will distract the team from serving customers well.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up as Ask Arbor, a feature bolted onto the MIS, not a rival trying to replace statutory record keeping. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: SIMS (Capita). SIMS fell from 85% to under 50% share as schools flee its on-prem system, and Arbor is the main beneficiary, not the victim. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Schools rarely switch MIS because it holds statutory records and DfE reporting ties; only 4% of Arbor customers consider leaving versus 33% of SIMS ones.

Questions people ask
Who owns Arbor Education now?
Arbor is owned by The Key Group, which was majority-acquired by private equity firm Permira from CBPE Capital in a deal that closed on 20 November 2025. Arbor itself joined The Key Group in 2020 under CBPE backing before the Permira takeover.
Is Arbor Education facing legal trouble?
Yes. Bromcom Computers PLC sued Arbor Education Partners Ltd in the High Court (EWHC 1605 KB), claiming Arbor made misrepresentations that cost Bromcom a 2022 United Learning Trust tender. Bromcom is seeking £4,180,188 in damages, with case documents dated 30 June 2026.
Who is Arbor Education's biggest competitor?
Bromcom is Arbor's closest active rival, holding roughly 30% of large multi-academy trust (25+ schools) market share versus Arbor's 39% as of a 9 July 2026 market tracker. SIMS, the legacy incumbent from Capita/ESS, has fallen from about 85% share to under 50% by spring 2024.
Could AI replace Arbor Education's MIS platform?
No. Arbor's Ask Arbor/Arbor AI, built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI and launched August 2023, is embedded inside the MIS to draft communications and summaries, not a replacement for it. Arbor's statutory DfE data-submission role and embedded student records give it lock-in generic AI tools cannot replicate.
How many schools use Arbor Education?
Company marketing from September 2023 cited over 5,000 schools and 400 multi-academy trusts using Arbor's MIS. A March 2026 LinkedIn company page states the broader Arbor/Key Group suite (including SAMpeople, Habitude, TimeTabler) is used by over 10,000 schools and trusts daily.
Is Arbor Education profitable?
No audited profit figures are public. Third-party estimates put 2024 revenue near $16.7 million (Latka, dated 2 January 2025) and $17.2 million (ZoomInfo, 6 June 2026), up from an estimated $4.3 million in 2020, but profitability itself is not disclosed.
