The call

Articulate grew revenue through the AI wave instead of shrinking, but Adobe's AI features and prompt-to-course startups are testing whether that keeps holding at the low end.

Articulate sells software that helps companies and trainers build online courses. It has strong customer lock-in because big companies have been using it for over 20 years and millions of people know how to use it, which makes switching hard. The main threats are Adobe (which makes competing software and just added AI features) and new AI-only tools that can generate courses from text prompts, skipping the traditional design step entirely. If those AI tools reach large companies and prove they work just as well, Articulate could lose customers to cheaper or faster alternatives, especially for simpler courses.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native course generators like Colossyan. Prompt-to-SCORM tools threaten to skip the instructional-designer workflow that Storyline depends on, especially in the low-end Rise segment. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Adobe (Captivate). Adobe shipped generative avatars and lip-sync in Captivate 13.0 in late 2025, closing the AI feature gap without needing to win new customers. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 20+ years of installed workflows, 1.2M+ E-Learning Heroes community, and Fortune 100 lock-in make switching costly even if AI tools improve.
What would change this call
A named Fortune 500 firm announces dropping Articulate for an AI-native course generator. Would show enterprise lock-in breaking and category compression underway.
Articulate's next ARR disclosure shows YoY growth below 20%. Would show growth stalling amid AI-native competition.
Adobe reports Captivate ARR or enterprise wins comparable to Articulate's. Would show the distracted incumbent re-engaging and closing the gap.

Questions people ask
Is Articulate profitable in 2026?
Profitability is not disclosed, but Articulate's CFO Edwin Scholte told Axios Pro on 2026-05-15 that the company surpassed $300M in annual recurring revenue, suggesting strong top line growth since its 2021 $1.5B Series A at a $3.75B valuation.
Who owns Articulate?
Articulate is privately held. It was bootstrapped by founder Adam Schwartz from 2002 until July 2021, when it raised a $1.5B Series A led by General Atlantic, with Blackstone Growth and ICONIQ Growth participating, at a $3.75B post-money valuation.
Could AI replace Articulate's course authoring tools?
Not yet at enterprise scale. Articulate embeds its own AI Assistant in Storyline and Rise (launched 2024-09-17), but AI-native tools like Colossyan can generate SCORM-ready modules in under an hour, a threat flagged in a 2026-01-26 comparison, mainly at the low end.
Who is Articulate's biggest competitor?
Adobe, via Captivate, is the most cited direct competitor. Adobe Captivate 13.0 shipped generative AI avatars with lip-sync in late 2025, matching Articulate's own AI Assistant features rather than being structurally blocked from competing.
Is Articulate a safe company to join in 2026?
Articulate shows growth signals: CFO-disclosed ARR of $300M as of 2026-05-15, no layoffs reported, and continued product releases through Q1 2026. Leadership structure has shifted since 2021 with unclear current CEO status between Schwartz and Suros.
Did Articulate raise new funding after its 2021 round?
No new institutional funding round has been publicly disclosed since Articulate's $1.5B Series A closed on 2021-07-01 at a $3.75B valuation, led by General Atlantic with Blackstone Growth and ICONIQ Growth participating.
