Auto Trader Group
UK's largest online marketplace for buying and selling used cars.
Auto Trader still dominates UK car listings and dealer workflow, but a bruising Deal Builder rollout and an AI search shadow have cut its stock in half.
Auto Trader Group runs the main website where people in the UK buy and sell used cars, connecting buyers directly to thousands of car dealers. It is hard to replace because so many dealers use it (over 90%) and buyers spend far more time there than anywhere else, which keeps both groups coming back. But a software update called Deal Builder in late 2025 went badly wrong: dealers canceled their accounts, buyers left, and the stock price dropped by half in just a few months. The big question is whether the company can win those dealers and buyers back in the next few months, or whether a new AI chatbot that lets people search for cars by just talking (like ChatGPT, which already exists in Canada) will eventually let shoppers skip the listing site altogether.
An AI-native vehicle search product (chat-based discovery) launches and gains usage in the UK market. Whether generative AI search is starting to bypass Auto Trader's listings for buyer discovery.
Auto Trader's direct buyer traffic share (from 80%+) or dealer ad spend measurably declines over the next 12 months. Whether the network moat is actually eroding rather than just facing a stock derating.
- FY2026 revenue £624.3m, up 4% YoY
- Operating margin around 63%
- Dealer forecourts fell to 13,942, trough near 13,500
- Mandatory Deal Builder rollout triggered dealer cancellations and forecourt decline, Nov 2025 to Dec 2025.
- Generative AI or agentic vehicle search could commoditize listings and reduce dealer ad-spend premium.
- Elevated bearish sentiment: 10.1% short interest, 4th most-shorted LSE stock as of July 2026.
- Share price halved from 900p (May 2025) to ~500p (July 2026), pressuring valuation and buyback economics.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Motors.co.uk (Cazoo) | contesting | Cazoo brand relaunched under Motors.co.uk 2024-2025 explicitly to challenge Auto Trader dominance |
| CarGurus UK | contesting | Operating in UK since 2016; Auto Trader retains 11x time-on-site lead per analyst, 2026-07-21 |
| AI-native vehicle search (e.g. TraderCorp AutoTrader ChatGPT integration, Canada) | gaining on | Live proof of concept Jan 2026 in Canada; not yet shipped in UK as of July 2026 |
- Is Auto Trader Group profitable in 2026?
- Yes. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, Auto Trader Group reported group revenue of £624.3m (up 4% YoY) and operating profit of £392.7m, an operating margin of roughly 63%, as reported May 21, 2026.
- Did Auto Trader's Deal Builder rollout cause dealers to leave?
- Yes. Making Deal Builder mandatory in November 2025 triggered a dealer revolt: about 100 dealers cancelled on November 12, 2025, rising to roughly 165 confirmed cancellations by December 1, 2025 per an IMDA survey of 700 members, and forecourt count fell to a trough of about 13,500.
- Could AI replace Auto Trader's car search business?
- It's contested. Equity analysts flag generative AI/agentic search as a disintermediation risk that helped drive a 2026 share-price de-rating and 10.1% short interest, but Goldman Sachs said in July 2026 that current AI trends have 'not materially raised disintermediation risk' for portals like Auto Trader.
- Who is Auto Trader Group's biggest competitor?
- Motors.co.uk (relaunched Cazoo brand, 2024 to 2025) and CarGurus UK are the closest rivals, but as of July 21, 2026 an analyst reported Auto Trader users spend about 11 times longer on the site than the nearest single competitor and over 80% of buyers arrive directly, not via referral.
- Is Auto Trader Group cutting jobs?
- Headcount has edged down slightly. Stockanalysis.com reported about 1,239 full-time employees as of March 2026, down 3.95% year over year, though management called average headcount 'broadly flat' on the FY2026 results call dated May 20, 2026.
- Who owns Auto Trader Group?
- Auto Trader Group is publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange (ticker AUTO) and is a FTSE 100 constituent with no parent company. Apax Partners bought the business from Guardian Media Group for £600m in January 2014, and it IPO'd in March 2015.
