The call

Balancer Labs the company is closing after a $128M hack it could not afford to survive, while the open-source protocol it built keeps running under other names.

Balancer Labs built software that lets people trade cryptocurrencies by pooling money together, similar to how Uniswap does it. The company is not hard to copy: competitors like Beets and BEX already copied its code, and Uniswap copied its special feature (called Hooks) that was supposed to set Balancer apart. A $128 million hack drained the company's money, it only makes $1.2 million per year in fees but spends $1.9 million to operate, and its BAL token is nearly worthless, so the founders decided to dissolve the company by March 2026. The one thing that could change this would be if the remaining treasury money gets managed well enough to keep the platform running longer, or if the open-source code gets picked up by a new team.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product targets Balancer's pool math directly; the threat here is exploit code and rival forks, not AI agents. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Uniswap. Uniswap V4 hooks matched Balancer's programmable pool pitch, and Balancer forks like Beets and BEX now run the same code without the liability. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Open source code still gets used by forks, so the protocol logic survives even as the company that built it shuts down.

Questions people ask
Is Balancer Labs shutting down?
Yes. Co-founder Fernando Martinelli announced on March 23-24, 2026 that the Balancer Labs corporate entity would dissolve, citing unmanageable legal liability from the November 2025 exploit and lack of sustainable revenue; operations move to a DAO-controlled OpCo.
Is Balancer profitable?
No. As of March 2026, annualized protocol fees were just over $1M (targeted ~$1.22M post-restructuring) against an annual operating budget of $1.9M, leaving the entity unable to cover costs without dissolving.
Was Balancer hacked?
Yes. On November 3, 2025, a rounding error in V2 Composable Stable Pool math was exploited via batchSwap manipulation, draining an estimated $110 to 129 million (converging near $128M) across six to nine blockchains in about 30 minutes.
Who is Balancer's biggest competitor?
Uniswap. Uniswap shipped its V4 hooks framework around the same period Balancer launched V3's Hooks Framework in December 2024, matching Balancer's key differentiator while Balancer's TVL collapsed from $3.3B (Nov 2021) to $61.79M (April 22, 2026).
Could AI replace Balancer's security auditors?
Possibly for bug classes like the one that sank Balancer. OpenAI released EVMbench on February 18, 2026, a smart-contract vulnerability benchmark targeting exactly the rounding-error bug class exploited in Balancer's November 2025 hack, though no internal AI adoption at Balancer was found.
What happened to the BAL token?
BAL collapsed roughly 99.9% from its all-time high of $74.45, trading around $0.098 to $0.10 with a market cap near $6.4M as of July 19, 2026, per CoinGecko, following the exploit and corporate wind-down.
