The call

Owning the runway at Samui still keeps rivals out, but Scoot flying in and load factor slipping show the route's pricing power is no longer automatic.

Bangkok Airways runs three airports in Thailand (Samui, Sukhothai, Trat) and uses them to fly regional routes that bigger airlines avoid. Scoot, a budget airline from Singapore, already started flying to Samui in May 2024, and AirAsia is ordering 150 new planes to reach secondary routes by 2028, which means Bangkok Airways cannot hide behind airport ownership anymore. The real question is whether Bangkok Airways keeps enough customers on Samui (its most important route) as competitors add flights and steal business, even though Bangkok Airways owns the airport itself.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI trip-planning tools could shift ticket search off airline sites, but nothing specific is hitting Bangkok Airways yet. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Scoot (Singapore Airlines budget arm) on Samui; AirAsia's A220 fleet for secondary routes. Scoot started flying into Samui in May 2024 and is pulling load factor down on the route that carries 65% of Bangkok Airways passengers. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. It owns the Samui, Sukhothai, and Trat airports outright, so rivals need its permission and gates to land at all.
What would change this call
Scoot adds a second daily Samui frequency or a rival low-cost carrier announces Samui service by 2027. Would show budget carriers actively converting Bangkok Airways' core route customers.
AirAsia's A220s begin flying to Sukhothai, Trat, or other Bangkok Airways secondary routes after 2028 deliveries. Would show the airport-ownership moat weakening beyond Samui.
Bangkok Airways reports Samui load factor and passenger share in its FY2026 annual results. Would confirm whether the 2025 decline from 80% to 76% load factor is continuing or reversing.

  • Passengers 4.23m in 2025, down from 4.33m (2025 FY)
  • Load factor fell to 76% from 80% (2025 FY)
Named risks
  • Scoot and AirAsia eroding Bangkok Airways' near-monopoly on the Samui route. Severity: medium
  • Jet fuel price doubling to $170-180 per barrel squeezing margins amid regulatory fare caps. Severity: high
  • Thailand tourist arrivals down 7% in 2025, a demand headwind for the airline. Severity: medium
  • Succession and governance uncertainty following founder Dr. Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth's death, April 2026. Severity: low
  • Passenger volume and load factor decline (4.23m and 76% in 2025) signaling contained but real demand softness. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Bangkok Airways profitable in 2026?
Yes. Bangkok Airways reported FY2025 net profit of THB 3.58 billion, down 6% year over year, on revenue of THB 25.5 billion that was essentially flat versus FY2024, per its earnings call dated 2026-03-09.
Who owns Bangkok Airways?
It is publicly traded on the Stock Exchange of Thailand as SET: BA but remains family-controlled. CEO/President Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth holds about 24.9% of shares and Bangkok Bank holds about 5%, as of 2026-03-11.
Could AI replace Bangkok Airways?
No. Bangkok Airways owns and operates the physical airports at Samui, Sukhothai, and Trat, a regulated infrastructure asset AI cannot replicate. AI could touch booking or scheduling software, but the core airport-ownership moat is physical and regulatory, not digital.
Who is Bangkok Airways' biggest competitor?
On its flagship Samui route, Scoot (Singapore Airlines' budget arm) resumed nonstop Singapore-Koh Samui service in May 2024, directly contesting Bangkok Airways' near-monopoly there. Thai Airways also looms as the larger incumbent, posting THB 30.9 billion net income in FY2025.
Is Bangkok Airways stock a safe investment given fuel prices?
It's mixed. Jet fuel roughly doubled from $80-90 to $170-180 per barrel by March 2026, prompting Bangkok Airways to raise domestic fares 15-20% from April 1, 2026, even as Thailand's CAAT mandated 15-30% fare cuts during Songkran, squeezing margins.
Did Bangkok Airways lose its founder recently?
Yes. Founder Dr. Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, who also founded hospital group BDMS, died on April 21, 2026, at age 93. His son Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth remains CEO/President, so succession continuity is already in place.
