The call

Bestow has real licensing and integration lock-in, but it is racing better-funded rivals and carrier in-house teams to prove that lock-in before the modernization window closes.

Bestow makes software that helps insurance companies decide whether to approve life insurance applications faster and with less paperwork. The company has some legal protections (state licenses and contracts with insurance carriers) that prevent random startups from copying it, but these protections are not unique or especially strong. Bestow competes directly against bigger, older companies like iPipeline and Vitech, and even insurance carriers themselves are building their own AI-powered approval systems. The one thing that matters most: whether Bestow can lock in customers so deeply that switching to a rival or building their own system becomes too expensive or difficult to do.

Why
01
AI pressure: Carrier in-house LLM underwriting teams. Celent expects 22% of carriers running agentic AI underwriting by end-2026, work Bestow currently does for them. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Zinnia, iPipeline, Vitech, EIS Group. Legacy admin vendors are modernizing their platforms and chasing the same top-10 carrier deals Bestow needs to win. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. State insurance licenses and deep carrier system integrations make ripping Bestow out costly once a book is running on it.
What would change this call
Zinnia or iPipeline announces a named top-10 US carrier win for AI-native life/annuity admin. Would show rivals closing the modernization gap faster than Bestow.
Bestow's next funding round priced flat or down versus the 2025 Series D. Would signal weakening investor confidence in the post-pivot B2B model.
A carrier discloses an in-house LLM underwriting system replacing a vendor platform. Would show carriers building internally instead of buying Bestow's tech.
Key numbers

  • 167 employees reported (2025-05-13)
  • ARR grew 10x over two years to 2024 (2025-05-13)
Named risks
  • Core underwriting-AI technology is model-replicable by carriers or rivals building in-house. Severity: high
  • Well-capitalized peers Zinnia and Ethos Life pursuing the same carrier accounts simultaneously. Severity: high
  • Financial metrics (ARR growth, profitability timeline) are vendor-claimed and unverified independently. Severity: medium
  • Prior full divestiture of its own carrier business in 2024 signals model volatility. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting headcount figures across sources suggest unstable or unclear organizational scale. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Bestow profitable in 2026?
No confirmed profitability has been disclosed. As of its May 13, 2025 Series D announcement, Bestow described profitability as 'on the horizon' while claiming ARR tripled in 2024 (vendor-claimed, unverified by independent financials).
Could AI replace Bestow?
Bestow's own product is an AI-native underwriting automation platform, but that also means carriers could build similar tools in-house. Celent found 22% of insurers plan agentic AI in production by end of 2026, per Bestow's own July 2026 blog post.
Who owns Bestow?
Bestow is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2016 by Melbourne O'Banion and Jonathan Abelmann. Its May 13, 2025 Series D of $120M was co-led by Goldman Sachs Alternatives and Smith Point Capital, with prior backers including AllianceBernstein and TriplePoint Capital.
Who is Bestow's biggest competitor?
Ethos Life is frequently cited as Bestow's principal direct rival with a larger valuation and broader product range, while Zinnia, backed by Eldridge, absorbed Ebix's North American life and annuity admin assets on April 1, 2024, making it a well-capitalized modernizer rival.
Did Bestow sell its insurance carrier?
Yes. In 2024 Bestow divested Bestow Life Insurance Company to Sammons Financial Group, which renamed it Lantern Insurance Company. Bestow retained no ownership and became a pure B2B enterprise SaaS company for carriers.
How much funding has Bestow raised?
Bestow has raised over $300M in equity funding across Seed, Series B, C, and D rounds as of May 13, 2025, plus a separate $50M credit facility from TriplePoint Capital announced the same day.
