The call

BitMEX built the market it now trails in, and its future depends on finding a buyer before volumes shrink further.

BitMEX created a product called perpetual swaps that let traders bet on crypto prices with borrowed money, and it was the leader for years. Other exchanges like Binance and OKX copied the product, made it faster and easier to use, and took over the market. BitMEX has almost nothing left to protect it now, just like how a restaurant that invents a menu item cannot stop others from making the same dish. The company just fired its leaders and is trying to find a buyer. The only thing that matters now is whether someone actually buys BitMEX at a real price and keeps the team in place, or whether it keeps shrinking until there is nothing left to sell.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product is the driver here; algorithmic market makers on rival venues just execute faster, not smarter. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Binance, OKX, Hyperliquid. Binance and OKX out-volume it in derivatives, Hyperliquid owns most DEX perp flow; BitMEX's share fell from 35% to about 2%. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Ten years of brand recognition as the perp inventor and a loyal offshore user base, but little else holds up.
What would change this call
Whether BitMEX's sale process concludes with a named buyer within 1-2 quarters. shows if BitMEX has any residual value or is being wound down.
Whether Equity/FX Perps volume reaches 10%+ of the TradFi-perp segment. would show BitMEX found a defensible niche against Binance and OKX.
Whether CEO Peter Wilkinson remains in place past Q3 2026. indicates whether leadership has stabilized or turmoil continues.

Questions people ask
Is BitMEX profitable in 2026?
No official financial disclosures exist since BitMEX is private. Third-party estimates range from $73M to $116M annual revenue (ZoomInfo, Growjo), while the June 2026 purge of CEO, CFO and growth chief amid a reported buyer search suggests cost pressure rather than clear profitability.
Is BitMEX being sold?
As of June 30, 2026, BitMEX has not confirmed a sale, but multiple outlets (Cryptopolitan, CoinDesk) report it is 'reportedly looking for a buyer' after simultaneously losing its CEO, CFO and Chief Growth Officer on June 29, 2026, widely read as pre-sale cost cutting.
Who owns BitMEX?
BitMEX is owned and operated by HDR Global Trading Limited, incorporated in Seychelles in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo and Samuel Reed. All three founders stepped back from management in 2020; Peter Wilkinson, former General Counsel, became CEO on June 29, 2026.
Could AI replace BitMEX?
AI trading bots and automation could erode BitMEX's manual Copy Trading feature and its research report writing, but its exchange license, matching engine, custody, and 11-year unbroken security record since 2014 (noted November 24, 2025) are not directly AI-replicable functions.
Who is BitMEX's biggest competitor?
Binance dominates spot trading with roughly 38-39% share in 2025 and launched competing TradFi perps (XAU/XAG) in January 2026. Hyperliquid, a DEX rival, held about 72.7% of DEX perpetual volume in Q2 2025, both dwarfing BitMEX's now roughly 2% market share as of mid-2026.
Did BitMEX lose market share to competitors?
Yes. BitMEX once held about 35% of bitcoin futures open interest but had fallen to roughly 2% by mid-2026, per The Block (updated June 5, 2025), as rivals like Binance, OKX, Bybit and Hyperliquid scaled the perpetual swap market BitMEX invented in 2016.
