The call

Bloomberg keeps raising prices on a flat subscriber base because traders still can't leave the messaging network, even as AI narrows the data-analysis gap.

Bloomberg makes money by renting a computer terminal to traders and bankers that shows live market prices, news, and lets them message each other. The real lock-in is not the software itself (ChatGPT can answer finance questions as well), but three things: (1) every major bank is wired into Bloomberg's messaging system and switching costs money and time, (2) Bloomberg has direct pipes to exchanges and regulators that took decades to build, and (3) banks pay whatever Bloomberg charges because walking away is too painful. The main threat is LSEG (the company that owns Eikon), which shut down its rival terminal in June 2025 and is trying to lure customers to its new Workspace product in 2026 and 2027. If LSEG pulls away a big chunk of fixed-income traders, or if new AI-search tools like AlphaSense start doing research work that traders used to do on Bloomberg, the picture shifts.

Why
01
AI pressure: AlphaSense and general frontier LLMs like GPT-5.6. AI models now match or beat BloombergGPT on some finance tasks, but they can't replicate Bloomberg's licensed data pipes or trader messaging network. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: LSEG Workspace (formerly Refinitiv/Eikon). LSEG killed Eikon and consolidated on Workspace in June 2025, aiming to pull fixed-income and FX seats away from Bloomberg by 2027. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Bloomberg Messaging locks traders into one network, and no bank consortium has ever shipped a working replacement.
What would change this call
LSEG reports Workspace subscriber gains or named bank wins in fixed-income/FX seats, 2026-2027. Would show LSEG converting Refinitiv/Eikon migration into real share taken from Bloomberg.
Bloomberg discloses declining (not flat) Terminal subscriber counts in filings or press. Would show the pricing-power moat weakening as clients actually leave.
A bank consortium ships a working off-Bloomberg messaging standard adopted at scale. Would show the messaging network lock-in finally being broken after past failures like Symphony.

Questions people ask
Is Bloomberg L.P. profitable?
Bloomberg L.P. does not disclose profit figures since it is privately held, but 2024 revenue is estimated at roughly $15 billion, and it has raised Terminal prices 6.5% in 2025 on a flat subscriber base, suggesting strong margins.
Who owns Bloomberg L.P.?
As of 2025, Michael Bloomberg owns approximately 88% of Bloomberg L.P. The remaining roughly 12% traces to the original Merrill Lynch investment and is now held via Bank of America, which acquired Merrill Lynch.
Could AI replace the Bloomberg Terminal?
Unlikely to fully replace it. Bloomberg's moat is its licensed real-time data, proprietary messaging network, and bank relationships, not the AI model itself. It launched ASKB, an agentic AI interface, inside the Terminal in February 2026 to defend that lock-in.
Who is Bloomberg's biggest competitor?
LSEG (formerly Refinitiv) is Bloomberg's closest rival, especially in fixed income and FX. LSEG retired the Refinitiv Eikon brand on June 30, 2025, consolidating its offering onto its Workspace platform.
How many subscribers does the Bloomberg Terminal have?
The commonly cited figure is about 325,000 subscribers worldwide, though that figure dates to 2022 and is still being repeated as of 2026, meaning the subscriber base has likely been flat for several years.
How much does a Bloomberg Terminal cost in 2025?
In 2025 a multi-terminal subscription runs about $2,360 per month ($28,320 per year), and a single terminal costs roughly $31,980 per year, after a 6.5% price increase over 2024 pricing.
