The call

Bromcom keeps winning government-scale UK contracts while the old market leader SIMS fades, but Arbor's consolidation and murky financials leave its next few years less certain than its win record suggests.

Bromcom sells software that schools use to manage student records, attendance, and grades. It is hard to replace because schools are legally required to keep these records in one system, and switching costs a lot of money and time. The main rival, a company called Arbor, is buying up competitors and growing faster, which could squeeze Bromcom's chances to win new customers from schools that are merging or shopping around. The one thing that could change everything is whether Bromcom can keep winning big contracts (like it just did with Northern Ireland schools) after the next few years, or whether the founder decides to sell the company.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Generic AI copilots could automate some reporting tasks, but statutory UK school data rules keep core MIS work with Bromcom. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No Google, Microsoft, or Amazon-scale player has entered UK school MIS; competition stays among specialist vendors like SIMS and Arbor. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Schools are locked into Bromcom's system for statutory government reporting, and switching mid-year risks compliance failures.

Questions people ask
Is Bromcom profitable in 2026?
No audited financials are public. Companies House shows accounts last filed 31 December 2024 with next filing due 30 June 2026, and no verified profit figure exists. Bromcom is bootstrapped with $0 institutional funding on record as of April 2025, per Getlatka.
Who owns Bromcom?
Bromcom is privately held and founder-led. Ali Guryel, who incorporated the company in 1986 as Shoebox Ltd before renaming it Bromcom, remains CEO as of April 2025. No VC, private equity, or acquisition activity has been recorded.
Is Arbor or SIMS the bigger threat to Bromcom?
SIMS holds 55% of the English school MIS market versus Bromcom's 8% as of the January 2023 census, but SIMS is decaying with tied-lowest satisfaction (6.0/10). Arbor, at 17% and absorbing ScholarPack by February 2026, is the more direct growth rival.
Could AI replace Bromcom's software?
Unlikely. Bromcom's core value is statutory compliance and system-of-record data lock-in for schools, which AI cannot substitute. Bromcom has added an in-house AI chatbot for data querying and reporting as a feature inside its MIS, not a replacement for it.
Did Bromcom win the Northern Ireland schools contract?
Yes. The Northern Ireland Education Authority selected Bromcom to roll out a School Management System to all NI schools, announced by June 2026, with full transition targeted by March 2027, per CB Insights reporting dated 2026-06-02.
What is Bromcom's market share in England?
Bromcom held 8% of the English school MIS market as of the January 2023 school census, according to a satisfaction survey published 2023-12-07 by The Key Support, versus SIMS at 55% and Arbor at 17%.
