The call

The chip business runs on BYD's own car volumes, so its fate now tracks BYD Auto's profit swings more than any outside rival.

BYD Semiconductor makes power chips for electric vehicles and sells most of them to its parent company, BYD Auto, which builds 4.6 million cars per year. It is hard to replace because BYD Auto needs chips designed and tested to work inside its own vehicles, and BYD Semiconductor owns its own factories to make them. However, BYD Auto's profits dropped 55 percent in early 2026, which means it may buy fewer chips or pressure prices, and the company has been stuck without a public stock offering since 2022, making it hard for investors to sell their shares. The one thing that matters most is whether BYD Auto's profits recover or keep falling over the next year or two.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Power semiconductors sit outside AI model competition; demand is tied to EV volumes, not AI compute cycles. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Infineon Technologies. Infineon still competes hard in China's open power-module market even as BYD Semi's captive sales push it past Infineon domestically. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Guaranteed internal demand from BYD's own 4.6M-vehicle output plus owned fabs and years of automotive qualification data.
What would change this call
Parent BYD's Q2/Q3 2026 net profit YoY trend. Shows whether the captive-demand engine is stabilizing or eroding further.
Confirmation of a BYD Semiconductor IPO filing or ChiNext listing. Would show liquidity path reopening after 2022 termination.
A major Chinese OEM (XPeng, NIO, Li Auto) design-win going to StarPower or another rival instead of BYD Semi. Would show BYD Semi losing ground on non-captive customers.
Key numbers
  • Targeting 60,000 wafers/month capacity by 2026 (2026-06-30)
  • 28.9% share of China's power-module market (2025-04-16)
  • Infineon holds 12.8% global auto-chip share (2026-04-13)
Named risks
  • IPO stalled since 2022 termination leaves no public equity liquidity path confirmed as of mid-2026. Severity: medium
  • Captive demand model tied to parent BYD Auto sales amid EV price war and reported profit decline. Severity: high
  • US DoD Section 1260H designation of parent BYD (June 2026) risks procurement bans and supply-chain friction. Severity: high
  • Export-control tightening on EDA tools/equipment could stall fab ramp toward 60,000 wpm target. Severity: medium
  • Key market-share figures rely on single-analyst blog synthesis rather than audited data. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is BYD Semiconductor publicly traded?
No. Its ChiNext IPO was suspended in August 2021 and formally terminated in November 2022. A November 2023 pre-IPO round targeted a ~$4.1B valuation for a possible 2024 relisting, but no confirmed listing had occurred as of mid-2026.
Who owns BYD Semiconductor?
Parent BYD Company holds a 72.3% stake following 2020 Series A/A+ funding rounds. Minority investors include Sequoia China, CICC Capital, SK Group, Xiaomi, Lenovo, Arm and SMIC, per a June 15, 2020 TechCrunch report on the $113M raise.
Is BYD Semiconductor profitable?
Yes. Net profit was about 1.2 billion yuan in 2022, up from 381 million yuan in 2021, according to a November 13, 2023 pre-IPO financing report; 2023 profit was internally projected near 2.25 billion yuan.
Could AI replace BYD Semiconductor's chip engineers?
AI-assisted EDA tools from Synopsys and Cadence, showcased at DAC 2026 (July 2026), can speed layout and verification work, but physical wafer fabrication and automotive-grade qualification data remain hardware-bound and not AI-substitutable.
Who is BYD Semiconductor's biggest competitor?
Domestically, Infineon: BYD Semiconductor's China power-module share reportedly rose to about 28.9% by 2023, overtaking Infineon's roughly 14.5%, per an April 16, 2025 industry analysis. Globally, Infineon still led automotive chips with 12.8% share in 2025.
Did BYD Semiconductor's IPO ever happen?
No confirmed listing has occurred. The ChiNext IPO was suspended in August 2021 and terminated in November 2022; a November 2023 pre-IPO round eyed a 2024 relisting, but the unit remained private as of mid-2026.
