The call

The business keeps growing and leads in both short video and Chinese AI chatbots, while governments in the US, EU, and China each pull at different pieces of it.

ByteDance runs TikTok (1.6 billion users worldwide) and Douyin (China's version), plus Doubao, a Chinese AI chatbot with 330 million monthly users. It makes money from ads and selling goods through creators. Facebook's Reels and YouTube Shorts copy the short-video format, but neither has taken TikTok's audience or ad dollars, and they are not getting share. The real threat is not tech rivals but governments: the US forced a sale in January 2026, Europe is fining it up to 6% of yearly revenue, and China banned certain AI chatbot features in July 2026. The one thing that changes everything is which version of ByteDance or TikTok you are buying into. If it is the new US company (a separate joint venture with Oracle), the business is smaller and the algorithm is retrained; if it is the parent company, you need to know whether the private market valuation is real ($370 billion to $550 billion, a huge range) and whether the US government reignites pressure on algorithm control before October 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI Sora and other AI video generators. AI video tools could flood feeds with synthetic clips and pull creator attention away from filming real TikTok content. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Meta (Reels) and Google (YouTube Shorts). Both copy TikTok's format and algorithm style but so far are not pulling meaningful engagement or ad share away from it. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A recommendation algorithm trained on 1.6 billion users plus TikTok Shop's creator commerce lock-in, both hard to copy fast.
What would change this call
EU DSA preliminary finding due, potential fine up to 6% of global revenue. Would show regulators materially constraining ByteDance's EU operations and finances.
Doubao MAU trend after tiered subscription rollout beyond May 2026's 6.1M drop. Would show whether monetization attempts erode ByteDance's AI chatbot lead.
TikTok USDS JV algorithm source-code review outcome and any Congressional action on ByteDance's 19.9% stake. Would show whether US ownership/control structure is further restricted or loosened.

Questions people ask
Is ByteDance profitable in 2025?
Reports conflict. Bloomberg said on Dec 19, 2025 ByteDance was on track for about $50B profit in 2025 based on ~$40B net income through Q3. But Sacra's later 2026 estimate says full-year 2025 net profit actually fell over 70% YoY due to a heavy AI infrastructure spending surge in H2 2025.
Who owns ByteDance now that TikTok US has split off?
ByteDance remains privately held, backed by Susquehanna, KKR, SoftBank, General Atlantic and others. As of Jan 23, 2026, TikTok's US operations became a separate 'TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC' majority-owned by Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX (~15% each), with ByteDance keeping a 19.9% non-controlling stake.
Could AI replace ByteDance's core business?
No credible evidence of that as of mid-2026. ByteDance owns frontier AI itself (Seed 2.0, released Feb 14, 2026, benchmarked near GPT-5.2/Claude Opus 4.5) and uses AI to power its recommendation engine and commerce tools rather than being threatened by an external model.
Who is ByteDance's biggest competitor?
Meta, via Instagram Reels and its relaunched creator affiliate commerce (March 2026), is described by analysts as TikTok Shop's 'real rival,' not Amazon or Shopee, per a June 21, 2026 Momentum Works analysis, even as Meta hasn't visibly taken TikTok's engagement or GMV share.
What is ByteDance's valuation and is there an IPO?
No IPO exists. Private valuations diverge sharply: a General Atlantic-led secondary priced ByteDance at $550B on Feb 25, 2026, while a separate HSG continuation vehicle closed at only $370B on May 18, 2026, reflecting pricing lag and fee dilution.
Will ByteDance get fined by the EU over TikTok?
The European Commission preliminarily found on Feb 6, 2026 that TikTok's 'addictive design' breaches the Digital Services Act, exposing it to a fine of up to 6% of global annual turnover; a final Commission decision was still pending as of mid-2026.
