The call

Naver's revenue and market share numbers still look strong, but the underlying usage data shows Korean users are already splitting their attention with ChatGPT.

Naver is South Korea's dominant search engine and shopping platform, making most of its $1.6 billion yearly profit from ads and commerce in a market where it controls over 60% of searches. The problem is clear: ChatGPT and Google's Gemini are answering questions directly instead of sending people to Naver's search results, and fewer Korean users are searching as often as they used to (down from 85% to 82% in one year). Naver is fighting back by building its own AI assistant (AI Tab) that people are trying out quickly, but the real test will come in mid-2026 when we find out if this AI feature is actually keeping advertisers happy and spending money, or just hiding the damage for now.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT and Gemini. ChatGPT usage in Korea hit 54.5% while Naver's own search usage rate slid from 85.3% to 81.6% in 2025. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google. Google still holds under 30% search share in Korea after 20 years, but AI chat products are giving it a new opening Naver never had to block before. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Korean language content, local payments, and shopping rails that ChatGPT does not replicate, plus AI Tab pulling 10 million users into Naver's own AI layer in 18 days.
What would change this call
Naver's Q2 2026 earnings (~Aug 7, 2026) show ad revenue growth stalling or reversing. would show ChatGPT usage bleed reaching Naver's core ad money layer.
Naver's domestic search share metric falls below ~55% in later 2026 surveys. would show the share-metric gains reversing as ChatGPT displacement deepens.
Multi-quarter retention data on AI Tab's 10M initial users published or leaked. would show whether AI Tab is durable lock-in or a one-time signup spike.

Could AI replace Naver's search business?
Naver is countering rather than being replaced so far: its AI Tab conversational search, fully launched June 25-26, 2026, reached 10 million users within 18 days by July 15, 2026, aiming to lock in agentic shopping and reservation actions AI chatbots can't easily replicate.
Why did Naver's stock fall despite record revenue in 2026?
Naver's market cap was down roughly 27% year-over-year as of July 14, 2026, even after five consecutive record revenue quarters, reflecting investor concern over Q1 2026 net profit falling 31.3% YoY on rising AI infrastructure spending.
