Discord
Chat and voice platform where communities run servers, bots, and Nitro subscriptions.
Discord's user base still looks hard to shake, but child-safety lawsuits and a shaky AI moderation rollout are testing whether the platform can grow without breaking its own product.
Discord is a free messaging and community platform where groups of friends, gamers, and communities gather in private servers to chat, share media, and use add-on tools called bots. Other companies like Slack (for work) and Telegram (for messaging) offer similar things, but Discord's real advantage is that it has so many people already using it and so many custom communities built inside it, which makes it hard to get everyone to move somewhere else. However, Discord is now facing major legal battles over how it handles child safety (more than 85 court cases combined), got hacked in 2025, bungled its attempt to verify users' ages, and accidentally banned thousands of people with a broken AI tool in 2026. The one thing that could save Discord is if it can fix these product mistakes and settle or win the legal cases without having to completely rebuild how it works.
Age verification rollout (Incode, Google Wallet) completes or stalls in H2 2026. Shows whether identity checks disrupt Discord's pseudonymous user base.
Discord IPO S-1 becomes public or filing is withdrawn/delayed. Shows whether investors see the legal and safety issues as a serious risk to valuation.
- 200M+ monthly active users
- $561M FY2025 revenue, up 29%
- ~70,000 user IDs exposed in breach
- MDL 3166 and state AG suits (85+ federal cases) could force mandatory product redesign.
- September 2025 breach exposed ~70,000 government IDs, fueling regulatory scrutiny.
- AI moderation system wrongfully banned 8,000+ users in mid-2026, undermining trust.
- IPO timing uncertain amid SEC backlog and valuation down to ~$8.5B from $15B peak.
- Age verification rollout delayed to H2 2026 with vendor churn (Persona to Incode/Google Wallet).
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Slack (Salesforce) | contesting | ~79M MAU, 215,000 paying orgs but enterprise-focused, not consumer, as of 2026-06 |

| Microsoft Teams | contesting | Microsoft tried to buy Discord for $10-12B in 2021-04 instead of building a rival |
| Telegram | contesting | Privacy-focused messaging alternative, no reported share gains against Discord as of 2026 |
- Is Discord going public in 2026?
- Discord confidentially filed for a US IPO with the SEC on January 6, 2026, using Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan as lead underwriters. As of July 2026 no public S-1 has been filed and no date is set; SEC backlog and softer tech valuations have pushed timing toward H2 2026 or later.
- Who owns Discord?
- Discord is privately held, founded 2015 by Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy. It rejected a reported $10-12 billion Microsoft acquisition offer in April 2021. Its last funding round (Sept 2021) raised $500M at a roughly $15B valuation; secondary markets valued it near $8.5B as of July 2026.
- Is Discord safe after its data breach?
- In September 2025 a third-party support vendor was compromised, exposing about 70,000 users' government ID images; attackers claimed a far larger scope. Discord has since pushed a delayed, still-in-testing age verification system using Google Wallet and Incode face scans as of June 2026.
- Could AI replace Discord's moderation?
- Discord already runs AI-based automod and age inference, but in July 2026 it admitted an AI moderation bug wrongfully banned over 8,000 users since May 2026 over harmless grid-pattern images, showing AI moderation is deployed but unreliable, not a wholesale human replacement yet.
- Is Discord facing lawsuits over child safety?
- Yes. As of mid-2026, Discord faces MDL 3166, a federal multidistrict litigation consolidating 85+ child-safety lawsuits, plus state AG suits including Texas, which won an emergency TRO on May 29, 2026, and cases from Nevada, Arkansas, New Jersey and Indiana.
- Has Discord had layoffs?
- Yes. Discord cut about 4% of staff (~40 people) in August 2023 and 17% (~170 people) in January 2024. Headcount fell from roughly 2,275 in 2023 to about 1,884 by December 2025, a roughly 17% decline, per Revelio Labs data.
