The call

Changyou still turns steady cash from its aging TLBB IP under Sohu, with no public AI content strategy as bigger rivals speed up.

Changyou.com is a game company owned by Sohu that makes money from one main fantasy game called TLBB. It brings in about $509 million per year with very healthy profits, and it has a 20-year license to keep making TLBB, plus Chinese government rules that protect it from outside competitors. The real problem is that Tencent and NetEase, which together control most of China's gaming market, are using AI to update their games faster and add new content quicker, while Changyou has not said it is using AI in the same way, which means its games could start feeling old and boring to players. The thing that matters most is whether Changyou can catch up in the next six months by announcing its own AI tools for making game content, or whether its game updates fall noticeably behind what Tencent and NetEase are shipping.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI content pipelines used by Tencent and NetEase. Rivals use AI to speed content updates while Changyou has disclosed no AI production plans, risking a cadence gap. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Tencent and NetEase. Tencent and NetEase hold over 60% of China's game market and ship AI-assisted content faster than Changyou does. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A 20-year exclusive license to the profitable Tian Long Ba Bu IP and China's game-licensing rules limit new entrants.
What would change this call
Sohu Q2 2026 earnings (~Aug 2026) reports Changyou segment revenue below $123M guidance floor. Would show TLBB franchise losing players faster than management expected.
Changyou announces (or fails to announce) an AI production-pipeline tool by end of 2026. Would show whether the AI content-cadence gap versus Tencent/NetEase is closing or widening.
Tencent or NetEase publishes a new AI-enhanced wuxia or MMORPG title launch in 2026. Would show rivals directly targeting Changyou's core wuxia/MMORPG player base.

Questions people ask
Is Changyou.com profitable in 2026?
Yes. As Sohu's gaming segment, Changyou posted FY2025 revenue of $509 million (vs $506 million in 2024) and operating profit of $238 million (up from $196 million), per Sohu's Q4 2025 earnings call on February 9, 2026.
Who owns Changyou.com now?
Sohu.com Limited (NASDAQ: SOHU) has wholly owned Changyou since completing a going-private buyout of minority shareholders on April 17, 2020, at an implied equity value of about $579 million, financed partly by a $250 million ICBC Tokyo loan.
Could AI replace Changyou.com's games business?
Not directly, since its 20-year TLBB IP and roughly 300 million registered legacy users are hard to replicate, but by mid-2025 over 60% of Chinese studios used generative AI in content pipelines while Changyou has disclosed no public AI deployment as of its February 2026 earnings call.
Who is Changyou.com's biggest competitor?
Tencent and NetEase, which together control over 60% of the Chinese gaming market versus Changyou's roughly $509 million FY2025 revenue; both rivals are shipping AI-enhanced content, including NetEase's Tripo AI-driven 3D generation in Where Winds Meet as of August 2025.
What is Changyou.com's flagship product?
Tian Long Ba Bu (TLBB), a martial-arts MMORPG launched in 2007 that has accumulated roughly 300 million registered users across PC and mobile variants, including a Vietnamese localization launched by VNGGames in October 2025.
Is Changyou.com still publicly traded?
No. Changyou delisted from NASDAQ (ticker CYOU) after Sohu completed a going-private merger on April 17, 2020; it now operates as Sohu's wholly owned gaming segment, reporting only through Sohu's public quarterly earnings.
