The call

Cheetah Mobile is funding a robotics and AI-agent pivot with cash from a shrinking utility business, racing bigger players in both new markets at once.

Cheetah Mobile makes phone-cleaning apps and is trying to build AI agents and robots instead, because phones now clean themselves. The phone-app business is dying fast because TECNO phones have built-in AI that does the job, and anyone can copy the AI agent wrapper (they said so themselves), so tech giants like Google and OpenAI could crush them anytime. The robotics side (OrionStar wheelchairs and cleaners) faces richer competitors like XPeng and Pudu who have way more money and engineering. The one thing that matters is whether their robot sales in late 2026 actually stick or if it was just temporary excitement, and whether the stock price falls far enough to get kicked off the NYSE.

Why
01
AI pressure: OS-level agents like TECNO's EllaClaw and the open OpenClaw agent ecosystem. Phone-makers now bundle AI agents that do what Clean Master and Battery Doctor used to do, and EasyClaw itself is a thin wrapper on the same open tech. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: UBTech Robotics, Pudu Robotics, XPeng, and Li Auto in service robotics. OrionStar's robots compete against better-funded rivals already selling humanoid and delivery robots at scale in China. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A large cash pile (RMB1.28B) and a legacy internet business still turning a profit buy time for the robotics and AI bets to mature.
What would change this call
Cheetah's legacy Internet segment revenue growth or margin trend in Q2/Q3 2026 filings. Would show whether OS-level AI agents like EllaClaw are eroding the utility-app cash cow.
Named enterprise-robotics contract wins or losses for OrionStar versus Pudu, UBTech, or XPeng in 2026. Would show whether OrionStar can retain customers against better-funded robotics rivals.
Cheetah Mobile stock price relative to NYSE $1 minimum-bid threshold over the next two quarters. Would show whether delisting risk is forcing a shrinking customer/investor base.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue RMB1,150.4M, up 42.6% YoY (2025-12-31)
  • Q1 2026 robotics revenue RMB51M, up 175.9% YoY (2026-03-31)
  • Cash and equivalents RMB1,280.6M as of Q1 2026 (2026-03-31)
Named risks
  • Legacy utility-app revenue being displaced by OS-level AI agents like TECNO's EllaClaw. Severity: high
  • Stock price decline from $6.67 to ~$2.83-3.12 between March and July 2026 risking renewed NYSE non-compliance. Severity: high
  • EasyClaw is a generic wrapper on open-source OpenClaw with no proprietary lock-in versus frontier labs. Severity: medium
  • Headcount fell 8.9% in 2025, signaling contraction amid business model transition. Severity: medium
  • 2022 SEC insider-trading settlement involving CEO Sheng Fu remains a governance overhang. Severity: low

Questions people ask
What is Cheetah Mobile's biggest risk?
The biggest risk is competitive pressure across all three business lines at once, which is unusual even within a weak cohort. Apple and Google keep absorbing utility-app features natively, robotics rivals Keenon, Pudu and UBTECH outpace OrionStar in deployment volume, and frontier AI labs like Baidu, Alibaba, ByteDance, OpenAI and Anthropic dwarf the open-source-based EasyClaw wrapper, as noted in the July 2026 assessment.
Is Cheetah Mobile in financial trouble?
FY2025 revenue grew 42-48% year over year to roughly US$160 million (period ended 2025-12-31), and Robotics segment revenue hit RMB51 million in Q1 2026, up 175.9% YoY and 19.8% of total revenue. But cash fell from $215 million to $185.6 million in a single quarter (as of 2026-03-31), and the company posted a GAAP operating loss of about RMB179 million against a non-GAAP profit of RMB14 million, so growth is real but profitability and cash trends need monitoring.
Who are Cheetah Mobile's biggest competitors?
In robotics, Keenon Robotics, Pudu and UBTECH already lead deployment volume, leaving Cheetah's OrionStar unit sub-scale as of the July 2026 assessment. In AI agents, EasyClaw is a wrapper on an open-source framework, competing against tools built by Baidu, Alibaba, ByteDance, OpenAI and Anthropic. In utility apps, Apple and Google continue absorbing features natively into their operating systems, squeezing the original legacy business.
Is Cheetah Mobile at risk from AI?
Yes, the AI threat is rated 'building' rather than already fully realized. EasyClaw is an open-source wrapper on other labs' models, and those same labs (Baidu, Alibaba, ByteDance, OpenAI, Anthropic) could offer a similar wrapper layer for free, undercutting Cheetah's differentiation. AI and Others revenue did grow 84.7% YoY to 46.5% of total 2025 revenue, so the segment is expanding even as the underlying defensibility looks thin.
How does Cheetah Mobile compare to its closest peers?
Cheetah Mobile is rated little protection left, the same standing as iClick within its peer group, as of the July 2026 assessment. Neither company shows a strong protective advantage in any segment: Cheetah's utility apps face pressure from Apple and Google absorbing features natively, its OrionStar robotics unit trails larger deployed fleets from Keenon, Pudu and UBTECH, and its EasyClaw AI wrapper competes against far larger frontier labs. Both companies sit near the bottom of their comparison group with no meaningful competitive defense identified.
What should I watch for with Cheetah Mobile going forward?
Two dated watch-items matter: whether the Robotics segment reaches RMB100 million in quarterly revenue by Q4 2026 (verifiable by 2027-01-31), up from RMB51 million in Q1 2026, and whether Cheetah discloses specific EasyClaw revenue or paying-user numbers in any earnings release through Q4 2026. Q2 2026 earnings, expected around September 2026, should also add detail on robotics margins and smart wheelchair shipments.
