Chery Automobile Co., Ltd.
Chinese automaker and China's top vehicle exporter for 23 straight years.
Chery still ships more exported cars than any Chinese rival, but BYD is closing in fast and EU tariffs could hit the overseas revenue that now makes up over half its business.
Chery builds and sells cars around the world from factories in 12 countries, with repair shops in over 110 countries. It has been shipping cars overseas for 23 years and built up real advantages: it knows how to make cars cheaply and has the government's support. However, two things are happening at the same time that could hurt it badly. First, BYD, another Chinese carmaker, is catching up in exports month by month and stealing some of Chery's customers. Second, Europe is about to put big taxes (17 to 38 percent) on Chinese cars like the plug-in hybrid models that now make up more than half of what Chery sells overseas. If those taxes go through and BYD keeps gaining, Chery's overseas business, which just became more than half its total sales last year, could shrink fast. The company will probably survive the next few years, but its profits and growth are in real trouble.
EU finalizes countervailing duties on Chinese PHEVs at 30% or higher. Chery's overseas revenue segment (52.4% of total) faces direct margin damage in its key growth market.
Chery's FY2026 asset-liability ratio and operating cash flow figures released in annual report. Shows whether leverage and liquidity concerns flagged in FY2025 are worsening or improving.
- 5.85 million cumulative exports, first Chinese brand past 5M
- FY2025 revenue hit RMB300.29bn (~$43.5bn)
- Export share fell from 22.9% to 18.1% as BYD gap narrowed
- EU countervailing duties of 17-38% on Chinese PHEVs could hit Chery's fastest-growing export segment.
- BYD rapidly closing the export gap threatens Chery's 23-year export-leader status.
- High 80.41% asset-liability ratio and declining operating cash flow flagged in own annual report.
- Domestic price war across China's EV/NEV sector could compress margins despite volume growth.
- FY2025 sales reached only 80.72% of an internally cited 3.26 million unit target.

- Yes. Chery's FY2025 net profit rose 36.1% year over year to RMB 19.51 billion (about US$2.83 billion), on total revenue of RMB 300.29 billion, the first time revenue topped RMB 300 billion, per its March 18, 2026 annual results.
- Who owns Chery Automobile?
- Chery listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on September 25, 2025, raising HK$9.14 billion. Per its own FY2025 annual report, a January 2025 equity transfer spun the company out of Chery Holding Group, so Chery Automobile now has neither a holding company nor an ultimate holding company.
- Is BYD beating Chery in car exports?
- BYD is closing in fast. In June 2026 BYD narrowed China's export gap with Chery to 17,000 units, down from 23,000 in May 2026, while Chery's export share fell from 22.9% to 18.1%, per BestSellingCarsBlog data published July 20, 2026.
- Could AI replace Chery Automobile?
- No. Chery is a physical manufacturer with 12 global plants and a 23-year export/dealer network across 110+ countries; AI (via Huawei's ADAS and cockpit systems) is a supplied feature layer on cars like Luxeed, not a replacement for its manufacturing and distribution moat.
- What is Chery's biggest competitor?
- BYD, its domestic rival, which is the largest global EV seller by deliveries (about 20% global EV share, Jan-Aug 2025) and was narrowing Chery's export lead to just 17,000 units by June 2026, per BestSellingCarsBlog.
- Will EU tariffs hurt Chery Automobile's exports?
- Likely, if finalized. The EU was preparing as of June 20, 2026 to extend countervailing duties of 17-38% to Chinese plug-in hybrids, directly targeting Chery, BYD and SAIC, threatening the overseas segment that made up 52.4% of Chery's 2025 revenue.
