The call

China Eastern keeps flying on state support and scale, but it remains the loss-making sibling among China's Big Three carriers.

China Eastern Airlines is one of China's three biggest airlines, backed by the government with guaranteed airport slots and routes that protect it from collapse for several years. However, it loses money every year while its competitor China Southern makes profits, and fast trains have already stolen much of its passenger business on shorter routes, which is hard to fix. The key question is whether China Eastern can stop losing money and start competing fairly with China Southern by 2027, or whether it stays trapped as the weakest of the three carriers.

Why
01
AI pressure: Alibaba Qwen travel-agent integration. Qwen-powered booking and loyalty tools could pull customer data and direct sales away from China Eastern's own channels. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: China Southern Airlines. China Southern already runs more domestic seats and posted a profit in 2025 while China Eastern stayed in the red. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Government ownership, protected airport slots and route rights keep it flying regardless of profit swings.
