The call

Feihe still sells the most trusted formula cans in China, but it just lost the top spot to Yili in a market with fewer babies every year.

Feihe makes infant formula and sells it through 200,000+ stores across China. It built a strong position over decades by controlling its own factories and rebuilding trust after a contamination scandal in 2008, which kept foreign brands and small competitors out. But Yili, a much larger Chinese company, just knocked Feihe from first place in early 2025, and Feihe is now spending heavily to fight back while the total baby formula market shrinks because fewer children are being born in China. The one thing that could turn this around is if Feihe can stop the bleeding and grow its adult nutrition business, but so far that is tiny and Yili keeps getting stronger.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Infant formula is a physical, regulated product; no AI agent or model competes for this shelf space. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Yili (Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group). Yili took 18.1% retail share in H1 2025 versus Feihe's roughly 17.5%, ending Feihe's six-year run as top seller. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Vertically integrated farms and plants, 200k plus retail points, and rebuilt trust after China's 2008 formula scandal.
What would change this call
Feihe's H1 2026 results (~28 Aug 2026) show whether Yili's share gap widens. Widening gap would confirm Feihe has become permanent #2.
Feihe's adult/senior nutrition revenue share in FY2026 filings. Staying below 5% shows diversification away from shrinking infant market is failing.
Feihe's net profit trend in next earnings print after the 45.7% FY2025 drop. Continued decline would show subsidy wars are still eroding margins.

Questions people ask
Is China Feihe profitable in 2025?
Yes but shrinking fast. FY2025 (year ended Dec 31, 2025) net profit fell 45.7% to RMB 1,939.5 million as revenue dropped 12.7% to RMB 18,112.6 million, per Feihe's HKEX annual results announcement dated March 26, 2026.
Did Yili overtake China Feihe in market share?
Yes. Third-party retail data cited by 36kr showed Yili's infant milk powder retail share hit 18.1% in H1 2025, overtaking Feihe, which held roughly 17.5% share in 2024 and had been the top-selling brand for six straight years through 2024.
Could AI replace China Feihe's business?
No. Feihe's moat is physical and regulatory: 13 vertically integrated factories, China's strict infant-formula registration regime, and 200,000+ retail points including mother-and-baby specialty stores. AI only touches peripheral workflows like quality control and demand forecasting, per an October 15, 2025 analysis.
Who owns China Feihe?
Chairman and CEO Leng Youbin controls China Feihe through his holding vehicle Dasheng Limited, reported near a 49% stake in the 2022 annual report. The company has traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (6186) since its November 13, 2019 IPO, which raised about HKD 6.7 billion.
Is China Feihe cutting jobs?
Not significantly. As of December 31, 2025, Feihe had approximately 9,480 employees, down only 110 people (-1.15%) from the prior year, a modest trim rather than a mass layoff, per stockanalysis.com data.
Why is China Feihe's revenue falling?
Feihe cited China's shrinking birth rate and reduced government grants; FY2025 revenue fell 12.7% to RMB 18,112.6 million. It also launched a costly ~RMB 1,500 per family childbirth subsidy in April 2025 to defend share, compressing margins further.
