The call

Cockroach Labs keeps its technical edge in distributed SQL, but stalled growth and a stale $5B valuation leave its next funding round as the real test.

Cockroach Labs makes databases that spread data across multiple regions and cloud providers while keeping data consistent and compatible with Postgres. The company's real strength is technical skill that competitors find hard to copy, but Amazon AWS, Google, and Microsoft have all launched their own versions (Aurora DSQL, Spanner, Cosmos DB) in the last few years, and AWS is the biggest threat because it can bundle its version with its other services. The one thing that could change everything is whether Cockroach's new architecture announced in 2026, which claims to be twice as fast and cheap, actually wins back customers from AWS and Google in the next two to four quarters, or whether the company runs out of money first and has to accept a down-round financing deal that shrinks its value.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI workloads feed them: vector search and pgvector support let CockroachDB host AI app data, not lose it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: AWS Aurora DSQL, Google Spanner, Azure Cosmos DB. All three cloud giants now sell their own distributed SQL, aiming at the same multi-region, strong-consistency niche Cockroach built. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Postgres-compatible, multi-cloud neutral design makes it hard for any single hyperscaler to fully replace without breaking that portability.
What would change this call
Cockroach Labs announces new primary funding round in next 6-12 months. Flat or down valuation confirms stalling; a clean up-round would signal recovery.
Published case studies of large accounts moving to Aurora DSQL or Spanner from CockroachDB. Would confirm hyperscalers are winning lighthouse multi-cloud customers.
Revenue growth rate reported at 30%+ YoY over two consecutive quarters. Would show reacceleration after the 2023-2026 flatline.
Key numbers
  • Series F: $278M at $5B valuation (2021-12-16)
  • 56 months since last primary funding round (2026-07-05)
  • ~15% layoff, roughly 75 people cut (2023-10-01)
Named risks
  • No primary funding round since December 2021, creating pressure for a down-round or distressed transaction. Severity: high
  • Secondary-market valuation estimates suggest up to 60% markdown from 2021 peak, threatening employee equity value. Severity: high
  • Hyperscalers AWS, Google, and Microsoft have shipped direct competing distributed SQL products, eroding single-cloud buyer segment. Severity: high
  • Growth score of only 6/100 as of July 2026 signals stalled momentum despite new product launches. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting reports on current CFO identity suggest possible unconfirmed executive turnover. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Cockroach Labs profitable in 2026?
No public profitability figures exist. Revenue estimates from third parties range $92M to $146M as of mid-2026, but Cockroach Labs is private and has not disclosed audited financials or profitability status.
Has Cockroach Labs raised new funding recently?
No. Its last primary round was a $278M Series F in December 2021 at a $5 billion valuation led by Greenoaks. As of mid-2026, that is roughly 56 months with no new primary round, per Crustdata's July 2026 data.
Is Cockroach Labs still worth $5 billion?
Unlikely. Secondary-market trackers put its implied valuation around $2.0 billion as of July 2026, a roughly 60% markdown from the December 2021 $5B Series F valuation, though estimates vary widely and are unverified.
Did Cockroach Labs have layoffs?
Yes. Employee-reported data cited by TrueUp indicates a layoff event around October 2023 affecting approximately 75 people, roughly 15% of the relevant group, as of that time.
Who are Cockroach Labs' biggest competitors?
CB Insights labels Cockroach Labs a 'Challenger' as of July 2026 against Snowflake, Google Spanner, Microsoft Cosmos DB, and AWS Aurora and Amazon DSQL, all of which ship competing distributed SQL database products.
Could AI replace Cockroach Labs' database technology?
Unlikely soon. Its moat is deep distributed-systems engineering (consensus/replication, multi-region consistency, regulatory compliance) that is hard for AI to replicate. Instead, Cockroach Labs is adding AI features like vector search (2025) and agent tooling (March 2026).
