The call

Codan is growing revenue and margins on the back of locked-in defense and public-safety contracts, with AI showing up as a feature inside its own products rather than a competing threat.

Codan builds two main things: radios and computer systems that help soldiers stay connected, and software that helps emergency dispatchers do their jobs and find hidden land mines. It is hard to replace because the U.S. military locks in suppliers through years of testing and approval, and because emergency systems need government sign-off and trust, which takes time and money. Motorola Solutions makes some competing dispatch software, but has not taken Codan's market share. The biggest risk is if the U.S. military cuts funding for the soldier-radio program that drives most of Codan's recent growth, or if new export rules make it harder to sell overseas.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up inside Codan's own gear, like edge-compute processing in DOCK-Ultra, not as a rival eating its market. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Motorola Solutions. Motorola's Zetron dispatch line competes in public-safety radio, but Codan's order book and margins keep growing regardless. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Years-long government certification and program-of-record status on soldier network hubs and demining gear that new entrants can't shortcut.
What would change this call
Codan's FY26 full-year results release around 20 August 2026. Would show whether Communications and SBMC growth momentum continued past H1 FY26.
Whether Anduril ships its own soldier-network hub separate from the Kagwerks/SBMC partnership. Would show if Anduril shifts from partner to competitor on Codan's core defense product.
US defense budget decisions on Nett Warrior/SBMC program funding levels. Would show if Codan's fastest-growing revenue segment faces program deprioritization.

  • Net debt cut to A$78.3M from A$124.1M (2025-06-30)

  • Communications growth concentrated in US defense programs (Nett Warrior/SBMC); budget or export-control shifts could hit fastest-growing segment. Severity: high
  • CFO Michael Barton retires 31 Aug 2026 after 22 years during an acquisitive growth phase. Severity: medium
  • Adaptive Dynamics earnout and integration performance unproven, completion expected early FY27. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Codan profitable in 2026?
Yes. Codan posted FY25 NPAT of A$103.5 million, up 27% year-on-year (2025-06-30), and H1 FY26 NPAT grew more than 50% year-on-year on revenue of A$393.5 million (2025-12-31), per its ASX filings.
Is Codan laying off employees?
No layoff evidence found. Revelio Labs data shows Codan's global headcount grew to roughly 1,090 by December 2025, up from 877 in 2023, consistent with acquisitions like Kägwerks (Dec 2024) and Adaptive Dynamics (May 2026) adding staff.
Could AI replace Codan's products?
Unlikely soon. Codan embeds AI as edge compute inside hardware like the Kägwerks DOCK-Ultra, used in the Soldier Borne Mission Command system delivered with Anduril in August 2025, rather than facing AI-native substitutes for its certified defense hardware.
Who is Codan's biggest competitor?
Motorola Solutions competes in public-safety dispatch and Lockheed Martin is an adjacent defense electronics prime, per Morningstar (2026-07-24), though Codan holds program-of-record status on tactical soldier networks that neither has displaced.
Who owns Codan Limited?
Codan is fully publicly owned, listed on the ASX under ticker CDA (also OTC as CODAF), with no controlling shareholder. Its market capitalization was approximately A$7.0 to 7.7 billion as of 24 June 2026.
Is Codan a defense contractor now?
Yes. Through its Kägwerks unit, Codan supplies the US Army's Nett Warrior program of record and, with Anduril, delivered the next-generation Soldier Borne Mission Command system in August 2025.
