The call

Commure has scale and cash, but Epic's native AI features and unresolved lawsuits leave its scribe business exposed.

Commure makes software that listens to doctor-patient conversations and writes medical notes automatically, saving doctors time. The problem is that Epic, which runs the computer systems at most big hospitals, just built the same feature into their own system in early 2026, and they partnered with a rival company called Abridge instead of Commure. Commure also faces two lawsuits over stolen trade secrets and has stopped growing its team. The biggest question is whether Epic will keep adding more AI features and keep leaving Commure out in the cold, which would make Commure's business much harder to defend.

Why
01
AI pressure: Epic's native ambient-AI charting and Microsoft/Nuance DAX. Epic now ships its own AI scribe and picked Abridge as partner, squeezing Commure's flagship product from two sides at once. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Epic Systems. Epic holds about 38% of US hospitals and can bundle scribe and RCM features for free, leaving Commure unpartnered so far. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep integrations across 60+ EHRs and 500+ hospital sites give Commure reach Epic alone can't replicate, if it holds.
What would change this call
Whether Epic announces a Commure partnership or leaves it unpartnered while expanding native AI charting. Shows whether Epic is co-opting or bypassing Commure as it did with Abridge.
Ruling in the Adaptamed trade-secret lawsuit, expected within 6 to 12 months. Would reveal whether Commure faces material damages or an expanded injunction.
Whether any anchor customer like HCA, Tenet, Providence, or the VA migrates scribe or RCM work to Epic-native tools. Would show direct customer loss to the incumbent EHR.

Questions people ask
Is Commure profitable in 2026?
Commure has not disclosed profitability. Third party researcher Sacra estimated ARR at about $105M in March 2024 with 150% YoY growth, and Commure self-reported ARR doubling three straight years through June 2025, but as a private company it discloses no net income figures.
Could Epic replace Commure's AI scribe product?
Epic shipped native ambient AI charting around February 2026 and has an equity or revenue-share arrangement with rival scribe maker Abridge as of 2025, directly threatening Commure's standalone Commure Scribe product, which Commure has not paired with an equivalent Epic partnership.
Who owns Commure?
Commure is private, incubated by General Catalyst. CEO Tanay Tandon co-founded Athelas, which merged with Commure in October 2023, and General Catalyst CEO Hemant Taneja serves as Executive Chair. It raised $70M at a $7B valuation on May 19, 2026, led by General Catalyst.
Is Commure facing any lawsuits?
Yes. A federal court granted Canopy Works a preliminary injunction against Commure in May 2025 over Strongline Pro trade secrets, and Adaptamed LLC filed a separate trade secret suit on April 20, 2026 alleging Commure used customer credentials to build a competing EHR product.
Who is Commure's biggest competitor?
Abridge is the closest direct rival in ambient clinical documentation and holds a reported equity or revenue-share tie with Epic as of 2025, while Epic Systems itself, holding about 38% of US hospital market share in 2023, poses the larger structural threat by bundling native AI charting.
How much is Commure worth?
Commure was valued at $7B post-money after raising $70M on May 19, 2026, led by General Catalyst with Sequoia, Morgan Stanley, and Kirkland & Ellis participating, up from a $6B valuation at its October 2023 merger with Athelas.
