The call

The fiber itself is hard to dislodge, but the debt load and repeated securitizations are the thing to watch, not AI.

Consolidated Communications owns Fidium, a fiber internet provider with 67,000 miles of cable lines serving rural areas in northern New England. It is hard to copy because laying fiber underground costs billions of dollars and takes years, and Fidium has local rights that competitors cannot easily get. However, the company borrowed a lot of money very quickly (over $3 billion in about a year), revenue was already dropping before private investors bought it, and a similar competitor called SiFi Networks went bankrupt in mid-2026, which shows that other fiber companies are struggling to pay their debts. The biggest threat is that AT&T and Verizon are building their own fiber networks across the country, including in areas where Fidium operates, so customers may soon have a choice. The one thing to watch is whether banks will lend Fidium money again for more borrowing: if lenders demand a much higher interest rate or refuse to lend, it means they think the company is too risky, and that could force Fidium into trouble.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven customer service and network-ops automation tools. AI can shrink call-center and back-office headcount, but it cannot lay fiber or replace the physical network. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: AT&T (fiber build to 60M passings by 2030) and Verizon (post-Frontier, 30M+ passings). Both giants are racing to pass more homes with fiber nationally, raising pressure in any market where footprints overlap. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 67,000+ route miles of owned fiber and ILEC franchise rights in dense rural New England towns big carriers skip.
What would change this call
Coupon rate and oversubscription level on Fidium's next asset-backed securitization. Rising coupons or under-subscription would show lender confidence weakening.
AT&T or Verizon announcing overbuild in Fidium's core Maine/New Hampshire/Vermont territories. Direct incumbent fiber competition entering Fidium's protected rural footprint.
Public disclosure of post-privatization revenue or take-rate figures. Would confirm whether revenue decline seen pre-2025 has stabilized or worsened.

  • AT&T and Verizon aggressively overbuilding fiber nationally, including Fidium's newer Texas and California expansion markets lacking rural franchise protection. Severity: medium
  • Common equity is illiquid and subordinated to Searchlight and BCI preferred stack post-privatization. Severity: medium
  • Post-privatization revenue and profitability are unverifiable since the company stopped public quarterly filings after December 2024. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Consolidated Communications (Fidium) profitable in 2026?
Unverifiable. The last public financials, for Q3 2024, showed a net loss of about $186.8 million on trailing twelve month revenue of roughly $1.09 billion. Since the company went private on December 27, 2024 under Searchlight Capital and BCI, it no longer files quarterly results, so 2026 profitability cannot be confirmed.
Who owns Consolidated Communications now?
Searchlight Capital Partners and the British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) completed a buyout for $4.70 per share, an enterprise value of about $3.1 billion including debt, closing December 27, 2024. The company delisted from Nasdaq and now operates under the Fidium brand as a private, PE-owned carrier.
Is Fidium the same company as Consolidated Communications?
Yes. Consolidated Communications completed a full corporate rebrand to Fidium on September 21, 2025, unifying residential, business, and wholesale lines under one name. The legacy Consolidated Communications name persists only for remaining copper-network customers.
Could AI replace jobs at Fidium?
AI threatens call center and tier-1 support roles industry-wide, with vendors claiming 50 to 84 percent automation of inbound telco volume as of June 2026, though these are vendor marketing claims. Fidium's core asset, 67,000-plus miles of physical fiber and ILEC franchise rights, cannot be replicated or replaced by software.
Who is Fidium's biggest competitor?
AT&T and Verizon pose the largest threat: AT&T reported 37 million fiber passings by Q1 2026 (targeting 60 million by 2030, plus a $5.75 billion Lumen consumer-fiber purchase), and Verizon reached 30 million-plus passings across 31 states after acquiring Frontier Communications in January 2026, targeting 32 million by end of 2026.
Has Consolidated Communications had layoffs or downsizing?
Third-party workforce tracker Revelio Labs estimates headcount fell from 3,222 employees in 2023 to about 2,864 by December 2025, an 11.1 percent decline, consistent with cost discipline following the December 2024 Searchlight and BCI privatization.
