The call

DM holds regulatory clearances and cross-brand reach while Align ships its own AI tool and chips away at DM's patents, with no clear winner yet.

Dental Monitoring builds software that uses phone cameras and AI to let orthodontists check patients' braces without in-person visits. It is hard to copy because it has FDA approval, EU medical device clearance, and a huge library of 2 billion images that trained its AI system. But Align Technology, which makes Invisalign (the most popular clear braces brand), just launched its own competing tool and won two major patent court battles in July 2026 that knocked out Dental Monitoring's core technology patents. The biggest question is whether Align will use its massive Invisalign patient base to slowly squeeze out Dental Monitoring, or whether Dental Monitoring's partnerships with other brace brands like Ormco and Straumann will keep it alive as an independent company.

Why
01
AI pressure: Align Technology's Invisalign Virtual Care AI. Align built its own AI monitoring tool for Invisalign patients, competing directly inside DM's biggest addressable market. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Align Technology / Invisalign. Align can bundle monitoring free with Invisalign and won two 2026 patent rulings against DM's machine-learning claims. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. FDA De Novo and EU-MDR clearances plus a 2B-image dataset and neutral fit across Ormco, Straumann and other brands Align can't serve.
What would change this call
Federal Circuit ruling in Case 26-1945 (certified list due ~July 27, 2026). Shows whether Dental Monitoring's core ML patents survive Align's challenge.
Align licenses or rebrands Invisalign Virtual Care AI as a standalone, brand-neutral product. Would show Align competing directly for Ormco/Straumann-aligner patients, not just its own.
Ormco/Spark or Straumann/ClearCorrect ends or expands its partnership with Dental Monitoring. Tests whether DM's aligner-neutral positioning is holding against Align's pressure.

Questions people ask
Is Dental Monitoring profitable in 2026?
Dental Monitoring states it achieved operational profitability in 2025, disclosed alongside a $100M funding round announced February 10, 2026 led by Lazard Elaia Capital and ISALT. This is a company statement, not independently audited, so the figure should be treated as unconfirmed.
Could AI replace Dental Monitoring's core product?
Dental Monitoring's product is itself AI-driven, but it holds an FDA De Novo clearance from May 2024 creating a new device category (21 CFR 872.1770) plus a proprietary dataset it describes as two billion images, both hard for a new AI entrant to replicate quickly.
Who is Dental Monitoring's biggest competitor?
Align Technology, maker of Invisalign, is the biggest threat. It shipped its own AI monitoring tool, Invisalign Virtual Care AI, and won two Federal Circuit rulings in July 2026 invalidating core Dental Monitoring machine-learning patents.
Who owns Dental Monitoring?
Dental Monitoring is privately held and VC/PE-backed, headquartered in Paris under CEO Philippe Salah. Major investors include Mérieux Equity Partners and Vitruvian Partners from its 2021 unicorn round, plus Lazard Elaia Capital and ISALT from a $100M raise announced February 10, 2026.
Is Dental Monitoring doing layoffs?
No layoffs are reported. Headcount tracking shows roughly 547 employees as of December 2025, essentially flat versus 544 in 2024, consistent with the company's stated focus on reaching profitability rather than expanding headcount.
What is Dental Monitoring's valuation?
Dental Monitoring became a unicorn in October 2021 after a $150M growth round led by Mérieux Equity Partners ($90M) and Vitruvian Partners ($60M), pushing its valuation over $1 billion, making it one of France's HealthTech unicorns.
