The call

Docker still runs the pipes millions of developers use daily, but growth has cooled, headcount is flat, and rivals are building around it.

Docker is a company that helps developers package and run software in containers, which are like lightweight virtual boxes that work the same way anywhere. The main things keeping Docker valuable are its massive online library of pre-made containers (Docker Hub, with 14 million items used billions of times monthly) and the fact that millions of developers are used to working with it, but Red Hat's free Podman tool, Microsoft's GitHub, and Amazon/Google/Microsoft's own cloud container services are winning customers away. Docker's sales growth has slowed from super-fast to just normal, it has not raised money in years, and its new idea to use AI to watch over software agents has not yet turned into real money, so the company is betting everything on whether its AI safety tool becomes essential faster than developers switch to the rival options.

Why
01
AI pressure: GitHub Copilot, Claude, and ChatGPT writing Dockerfiles and debugging containers directly. Coding assistants now handle routine Dockerfile and container troubleshooting, chipping at daily reliance on Docker's own tools. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Red Hat Podman and GitHub/Microsoft bundling container tooling into GitHub and Azure. Podman is winning enterprise migrations and Microsoft is folding container workflows into GitHub, cutting reasons to pay Docker. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Docker Hub's 14 million images and years of developer habit make switching costly even as free alternatives spread.
What would change this call
Docker announces a new funding round or valuation within 12 months. Would show whether investors believe the AI-governance pivot is converting to revenue.
Fortune 500 companies publicly disclose switching from Docker Desktop to Podman. Would confirm Docker's core distribution and workflow moat is eroding.
GitHub or Microsoft bundles a container registry alternative directly into GitHub or Azure. Would show Docker Hub facing direct incumbent substitution at the platform level.
Key numbers
  • $207M ARR in 2024, growth fell to ~25% YoY (2024)
  • 51+ months since last funding round (Mar 2022) (2026-06)
  • 14M+ images, 11-20B monthly pulls on Docker Hub (2025-12)
Named risks
  • No priced funding round since March 2022 despite 4+ years elapsed, raising down-round risk. Severity: high
  • Podman and free alternatives gaining share after Docker Desktop's 2021 and 2024 licensing changes. Severity: high
  • AI-agent governance pivot (Gordon, MCP, Docker AI Governance) remains commercially unproven. Severity: medium
  • Headcount trend ambiguous across data providers, with Revelio Labs showing 2025 contraction. Severity: medium
  • Supply-chain vulnerabilities like CVE-2025-62725 undercut Docker's security-vendor positioning. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Docker profitable in 2026?
Docker does not disclose audited financials. Third-party estimates from Sacra put ARR at about $207M in 2024, but growth slowed sharply from roughly 150% YoY in 2023 to about 25% YoY in 2024, suggesting thinning margins on a decelerating base rather than confirmed profitability.
Could AI replace Docker?
No single AI model replaces Docker Hub's distribution network or container runtime, but Docker itself admitted in a February 2026 blog post that generic assistants like Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot increasingly handle routine troubleshooting and Dockerfile authoring, eroding part of its traditional value-add.
Who owns Docker, Inc.?
Docker is privately held and venture-backed, last valued at $2.1 billion after a $105M Series C round in March 2022 led by Bain Capital Ventures with Atlassian Ventures, Citi Ventures, Vertex Ventures, and Four Rivers. No new priced funding round has been reported since then, as of mid-2026.
Who is Docker's biggest competitor?
Red Hat's Podman is Docker's closest architectural rival, daemonless, rootless, and free, and is increasingly cited (as of July 2026) as the alternative enterprises migrate to after Docker Desktop's 2021 and 2024 per-seat licensing changes.
Is Docker still growing fast?
Growth has decelerated sharply: Sacra estimates put Docker's ARR growth at roughly 150% YoY in 2023 versus only about 25% YoY by 2024, reaching an estimated $207M ARR, with only 7 to 10% of its roughly 15M users on paid tiers.
What is Docker doing with AI?
Docker shipped Docker Model Runner in April 2025 for local GenAI execution, launched its Gordon AI agent to general availability in May 2026 inside Docker Desktop, and introduced Docker AI Governance in May 2026 to control AI agent network, filesystem, and credential access.
