The call

The telco-core business looks protected by switching costs, but the $8.5B price tag rides on winning AI-fabric share against Arista, Cisco and Nvidia, who are all shipping now.

DriveNets makes software that manages data flow for large phone companies like AT&T and Comcast, and is now trying to sell similar technology to companies building artificial intelligence computer farms. The phone company business is hard for rivals like Cisco and Juniper to steal because those companies make physical boxes they don't want to cannibalize, while DriveNets just sells the software layer. But the AI farm business is a completely open fight where Arista, Cisco, and Nvidia (which makes the AI chips themselves) are all shipping their own competing products right now and have no reason to hold back. The one thing that matters: whether DriveNets wins enough AI farm customers in the next year or so, because if it doesn't, the company survives on phone company software alone but investors paid for the bigger AI prize.

Why
01
AI pressure: Nvidia Spectrum-X and NVLink networking stack. Nvidia bundles networking with its GPUs, squeezing room for DriveNets' independent AI-fabric software. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Cisco (G300/N9000) and Arista (7060XE7) Ethernet AI-fabric switches. Cisco and Arista are shipping or about to ship rival AI-fabric switches into the same buyer set DriveNets is chasing. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Telco-core software runs inside AT&T, Comcast and KDDI networks with high switching costs Cisco/Juniper can't easily undercut.
What would change this call
Arista's 7060XE7 ships Q4 2026 and lands named hyperscaler or NeoCloud wins. shows incumbents can take AI-fabric deals DriveNets is chasing.
Cisco G300/N9000 announced production customers beyond pilots. shows Cisco converting AI-fabric interest into deployed share.
DriveNets names AI-fabric customers beyond WhiteFiber within 12 months. shows whether design wins are widening or staying thin.
Key numbers
  • >30% of US internet traffic runs on DriveNets software (2026)
  • $8.5B valuation after $410M Series D (2026-06-01)
  • >$1B in secured bookings/backlog (2026-06-01)
Named risks
  • AI Fabric business faces Arista, Cisco and Nvidia shipping directly competing products in the same 6-12 months from mid-2026. Severity: high
  • No independently confirmed revenue figures exist beyond company statements and unconfirmed aggregator estimates. Severity: medium
  • Valuation jumped from $1B to $8.5B in five years, exposing equity to any AI capex slowdown. Severity: medium
  • AT&T is simultaneously a shareholder and a major customer, concentrating dependency risk. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is DriveNets profitable in 2026?
DriveNets says it became cash flow positive in 2025, per its own January 20, 2026 blog post, and reports over $1 billion in secured bookings for delivery over the next several years as of its June 2026 Series D announcement.
Who owns DriveNets?
DriveNets is privately held. Backers include Bessemer Venture Partners, Pitango Growth, D1 Capital Partners, Atreides Management, Red Dot Capital and AMD, plus AT&T, which bought a roughly 15% secondary stake worth $650 million to $800 million around October 2025.
Is DriveNets a safe company to join right now?
Headcount has been growing, from about 450 employees in July 2025 with plans to add 100 more, to roughly 500 by mid-2026 per Wikipedia. The company also closed a $410 million Series D in June 2026 at an $8.5 billion valuation, with no layoffs reported.
Who is DriveNets' biggest competitor?
In AI networking fabric, Arista Networks, Cisco and Nvidia are all shipping directly competing products, with Arista's 7060XE7 due Q4 2026 and Cisco's G300/N9000 imminent as of mid-2026. In telecom core networking, Cisco and Juniper are structurally blocked from matching DriveNets' disaggregated model.
Could AI replace DriveNets?
No, DriveNets sells physical and software networking infrastructure that AI clusters run on, including Ethernet-based AI Fabric products; it is not a service vulnerable to being replaced by AI models, though its growth depends on continued AI infrastructure capital spending.
How much is DriveNets worth in 2026?
DriveNets reached an $8.5 billion post-money valuation after closing a $410 million Series D round in June 2026, led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Atreides Management with AMD as a new investor, per Globes reporting dated June 1, 2026.
