The call

EPC still ships real GaN chips to hundreds of customers, but its patent shield is gone and bigger rivals now build AI power gear NVIDIA names first.

EPC makes gallium nitride chips, a special type of power semiconductor used in data centers and electric vehicles. The company is now under pressure because a US court threw out one of its key patents in March 2025, and a Chinese competitor called Innoscience won a legal fight that lets it sell cheaper chips in America. Meanwhile, much larger companies like Infineon and Renesas are buying up GaN companies and building their own factories, making it harder for a small independent player like EPC to compete on price or scale. The one thing that could help EPC is if NVIDIA officially names it as a partner for a new high-power chip system called 800VDC MGX, but NVIDIA has not confirmed this yet and EPC's claim comes only from EPC itself.

Why
01
AI pressure: NVIDIA's 800VDC MGX ecosystem (Infineon, Navitas named as partners). NVIDIA's own 800VDC blog lists Infineon and Navitas as partners for AI power, not EPC, despite EPC's working demo chip. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Infineon Technologies. Infineon bought GaN Systems for $830M and is building its own 300mm GaN fab, undercutting EPC on scale and price. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 700+ customers across automotive, space, and industrial locked into EPC's existing eGaN designs and its radiation-hardened EPC Space line.
What would change this call
NVIDIA adds EPC to its own published 800VDC MGX partner list within 12 months. Would confirm an NVIDIA-validated AI datacenter design win, not just EPC's own claim.
Innoscience announces US revenue or customer wins following its Feb 2026 CBP clearance. Would show Innoscience converting legal US access into actual share taken from EPC.
A US court or USPTO ruling on EPC's appeal of the invalidated '294 patent. Would show whether EPC's IP moat is restored or permanently gone.
Key numbers
  • 700+ active global customers (2024-07-08)
  • EPC91123 converter hits 97-98% efficiency (2026-01-26)
  • Infineon paid $830M for GaN Systems (2023)
Named risks
  • Core patent, the '294 patent, invalidated by USPTO March 2025, weakening IP leverage. Severity: high
  • Innoscience cleared for US market access Feb 2026 with reported ~50% lower pricing. Severity: high
  • EPC absent from NVIDIA's own named 800VDC MGX partner list as of Jan 2026. Severity: medium
  • Fabless dependence on external foundries (VIS/Vanguard) amid TSMC GaN exit reshaping supply chain. Severity: medium
  • Subscale size (~100-140 employees) versus consolidating multibillion-dollar rivals raises acquisition-or-fade exposure. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Efficient Power Conversion (EPC) profitable in 2026?
EPC is private and does not disclose audited financials. Aggregator estimates of revenue are unconfirmed and vary widely (from about $14M to $38M in different years), so no verified profitability figure exists as of July 2026.
Is EPC's GaN patent moat still intact?
No. The USPTO invalidated EPC's key '294 patent in March 2025, and in February 2026 U.S. Customs and Border Protection ruled in Innoscience's favor, ending the ITC exclusion EPC had relied on to block Chinese GaN imports.
Who is EPC's biggest competitor?
Innoscience, a Chinese GaN maker that Yole Group named 2025 power-GaN market leader by shipment volume, now legally cleared for the US market since February 2026 and reportedly pricing near half of rival suppliers.
Could AI replace EPC's engineering work?
No. Physical GaN power-transistor design and manufacturing is a hardware discipline, not an AI-displaceable service. EPC's real threat is price commoditization from low-cost Chinese GaN supply, not AI automation, as of 2026.
Is EPC involved with NVIDIA's AI data-center power push?
EPC says its EPC91123 800V-to-12.5V, 6kW converter (about 97-98% efficiency) supports NVIDIA's MGX 800VDC AI-factory architecture, but NVIDIA's own January 14, 2026 developer blog names Delta, Eaton, Infineon and Navitas as partners, not EPC.
Who owns Efficient Power Conversion?
EPC is privately held, founded in 2007 by CEO Alex Lidow (co-inventor of the HEXFET MOSFET and former International Rectifier CEO) with Joe Cao and Robert Beach; it has never been acquired or gone public as of July 2026.
