The call

Enko has chemistry partners and funding history but no product, no Series D since 2022, and a 5 to 10 year runway to its first commercial sale.

Enko Chem builds computer tools to help companies find new chemicals and medicines faster, using a mix of lab experiments in a test tube and artificial intelligence. The hard part would normally be that the company owns special data and software that took years to build, plus chemical rules and legal responsibility are boring for competitors to chase. But Enko has not sold anything to real customers yet and probably will not for five to ten more years, while the huge companies it works with (like Syngenta and Bayer) could easily build the same tools themselves or buy a different company that already has. The one thing that matters most is whether Enko can raise fresh money on good terms next, because four years without new funding at a company that burns cash fast means the founders will likely have to accept a deal with their current partners at a low price or worse, which would wipe out investor returns no matter how good the science turns out to be.

Why
01
AI pressure: Bayer, Corteva, and Syngenta building their own in-house DEL plus machine-learning discovery platforms. The same giants funding Enko can copy its DNA-encoded-library plus AI recipe internally before any Enko product reaches a field. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Syngenta, Bayer, Corteva, BASF, Nufarm. These firms are Enko's partners and funders today, but each has the scale to run parallel discovery programs and skip Enko later. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Regulatory registration data and years-long partner relationships with Nufarm and Syngenta raise the cost of walking away mid-program.
What would change this call
Enko announces a priced Series D round within 12-18 months. Flat or up pricing signals investor confidence; a down-round signals funding strain.
Syngenta or Nufarm issues a second joint milestone update after the Jan 2024 announcement. Continued updates show partner commitment; 18+ months of silence signals deprioritization.
Bayer, Corteva, or BASF announce an in-house DEL plus AI discovery platform with published results. Would show giants building equivalent capability rather than relying on Enko.
Key numbers
  • $70M Series C led by Nufarm (2022-07-27)
  • Series C expanded to $80M total (2023-02-01)
  • About 50 active discovery programs, zero marketed products (2025-08-07)
Named risks
  • No new funding round since 2022 Series C, four-year financing gap for capital-intensive R&D. Severity: high
  • No marketed product; commercial launch estimated 5-10 years out per CEO Klemm, Aug 2025. Severity: high
  • Partner giants (Syngenta, Bayer, Corteva, Nufarm) can build or acquire equivalent AI+DEL discovery in-house. Severity: high
  • Heavy reliance on Nufarm and Syngenta partnerships for commercialization path. Severity: medium
  • Recent CEO transition in March 2025 adds leadership uncertainty. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Enko Chem profitable in 2026?
No. Enko Chem has no marketed crop-protection product as of August 2025, running about 50 active discovery programs, with CEO Tony Klemm estimating 5 to 10 years before U.S. row-crop products reach commercial launch. Revenue today likely comes from partner milestone payments, not product sales.
Who owns Enko Chem?
Enko Chem is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2017. Investors include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Nufarm, Anterra Capital, Finistere Ventures, Rabobank, Eight Roads Ventures and Endeavor8, per a September 26, 2024 Businesswire release. No IPO or acquisition has occurred.
Has Enko Chem raised a Series D?
No Series D has been publicly confirmed as of April 2026. Enko's last financing was a $70 million Series C led by Nufarm in July 2022, expanded to $80 million in February 2023, meaning funding has stalled for roughly four years.
Could AI replace Enko Chem's business?
Enko already uses AI and DNA-encoded libraries as its core discovery engine, per its ENKOMPASS platform page. But regulatory chemical registration and field-trial infrastructure, needed to actually sell a crop-protection product, sit outside pure AI reach and remain Enko's real bottleneck.
Who is Enko Chem's biggest competitor?
Closest peers using similar AI/DEL small-molecule discovery are MoA Technology and Boragen, per a 2020 C&EN report. More structurally, Enko's own partners, Syngenta, Bayer, and Corteva, already run significant in-house AI/ML discovery efforts as of a July 2026 report.
What products does Enko Chem actually sell?
None yet. Enko has no marketed crop-protection product; its offering is the ENKOMPASS discovery platform used with partners like Syngenta and Nufarm. A European black-grass herbicide and U.S. corn/soybean candidates are in field trials as of August 2025.
