The call

Eppendorf still holds certifications, tip lock-in, and a global service network, but three straight years of falling revenue and margin overlap with Thermo Fisher's new consumables capacity coming online.

Eppendorf makes pipette tips, centrifuges, and other tools for laboratories and pharmaceutical factories. Its brand name and certifications give it real advantages that are hard to copy, but its sales have dropped sharply since 2022, and Thermo Fisher is now building massive factories to make cheap pipette tips and directly compete with Eppendorf's core business. The question is whether Eppendorf's decline is a temporary slump from the end of the COVID boom that it can recover from, or whether it is losing permanent market share to a much larger competitor, which would be much harder to fix.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI lab-agent or model is displacing pipettes and centrifuges yet; the risk is Eppendorf's own VisioNize software falling behind on AI features. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Thermo Fisher Scientific. Thermo Fisher opened a 40 million tips per week plant in August 2025, aimed straight at Eppendorf's core consumables business. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. GLP/GMP certifications, tip geometry that locks customers into Eppendorf-specific pipettes, and a service network in 30+ countries.
What would change this call
Eppendorf FY2026 revenue growth or decline versus FY2025's €924M. Shows whether the 2022-2025 revenue slide is bottoming out or continuing structurally.
Thermo Fisher quarterly reports showing consumables/tips volume growth through 2026-2027. Would indicate Thermo's new capacity is visibly taking pipette-tip share from Eppendorf.
Eppendorf FY2026 EBIT margin versus FY2025's 4.0%. Tests whether profitability stabilizes or approaches zero, signaling deeper structural trouble.
Key numbers
  • Revenue fell from €1.23B (2022) to €924M (2025)
  • EBIT margin dropped from 10.8% to 4.0% (2024)
  • R&D spend cut from €76M to €60.9M (2025)
Named risks
  • Three straight years of revenue decline (EUR 1.23B to 924M) with EBIT margin collapsing to 4.0% by FY2024. Severity: high
  • Thermo Fisher's 40M tips/week capacity (Aug 2025) directly targets Eppendorf's consumables moat. Severity: high
  • Continued headcount reduction, down about 11% from 2023 to 2025. Severity: medium
  • No AI-driven feature shipped on VisioNize while competitors emphasize AI-driven lab platforms. Severity: medium
  • Ownership structure and governance details remain unverified in public sources. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Eppendorf profitable in 2025?
Yes but thinly. Eppendorf's EBIT margin collapsed from 18.3% in 2022 to 4.0% in FY2024 (€39.4M EBIT on €980.3M revenue), and FY2025 revenue fell further to €924M. The company remains profitable but margins have nearly disappeared over three years.
Could AI replace Eppendorf's products?
No. Eppendorf makes physical instruments (pipettes, centrifuges, consumables) requiring GLP/GMP-certified manufacturing and precision engineering, none of which AI can substitute. Its VisioNize Lab Suite software remains rules-based device monitoring, not AI-driven, per current product documentation as of 2026.
Who is Eppendorf's biggest competitor?
Thermo Fisher Scientific is the most direct threat: it opened a new pipette-tip Manufacturing Center of Excellence producing 40 million tips per week in August 2025, aimed squarely at Eppendorf's consumables core business. Sartorius, Gilson, and INTEGRA Biosciences also compete in liquid handling.
Who owns Eppendorf?
Eppendorf SE (formerly Eppendorf AG) is a private company headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, not exchange-listed for trading. GlobalData and BCC Research classify it as privately held as of July 2026; no current public ownership-structure disclosure was found.
Is Eppendorf laying off workers?
Yes, gradually. Headcount dropped from 5,571 in 2023 to 5,093 in 2024 (-9.0%) and to 4,948 in 2025 (-2.9%), per Revelio Labs data from June 2026. Part of this reflects a July 2025 divestiture of Thailand operations to DKSH Management.
Has Eppendorf launched any AI features?
No evidence found. Eppendorf's VisioNize Lab Suite remains a cloud-based rules-based device monitoring platform (alerts, audit trail), not an AI or LLM-driven system, based on its own product documentation as of the most recent search.
