The call

Esperanto Technologies no longer operates as an independent company; its RISC-V AI chip work continues only as open-source code under Ainekko.

Esperanto Technologies designed processor chips meant to compete in artificial intelligence computing, but the company ran out of money and closed in July 2025 after its engineers left. Competing against much larger companies like Nvidia and AMD proved too difficult, and Esperanto never actually sold its chips to real customers or raised new funding after 2018. Now that its technology has been given away as open-source code, anyone can copy it for free, which means the company's ideas have no special protection left, so even if Esperanto still existed, there would be nothing stopping rivals from using the same designs.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models are not what killed this company; it built chips meant to run AI, and lost to bigger chipmakers instead. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Nvidia and AMD. Nvidia and AMD's dominance and much higher pay drained Esperanto's engineers and cut off new funding, ending in shutdown. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None left: Esperanto ceased operations in July 2025 and its chip designs now live only as open-source code under Ainekko.
What would change this call
Ainekko completes its planned test tape-out combining Esperanto cores with Veevx MRAM in early 2026. Would show the open-sourced IP still attracts real engineering investment post-shutdown.
OpenHW Foundation releases the ET-SoC-1 RTL publicly. Would confirm the open-sourcing is real and could enable third-party adoption.
Any edge, robotics, or IoT vendor announces a product using the open-sourced Esperanto RISC-V cores. Would show the architecture gained commercial traction Esperanto itself never achieved.

Questions people ask
Is Esperanto Technologies still operating in 2026?
No. Esperanto Technologies ceased most operations in July 2025 after sustained engineering attrition, and in October 2025 its IP was sold to startup Ainekko, which open-sourced the ET-SoC-1 design under Apache 2.0 in November 2025.
Who bought Esperanto Technologies' chip IP?
Ainekko, a San Francisco based open-source AI infrastructure startup, acquired Esperanto's chip designs, software tooling, and development frameworks in October 2025, with deal terms undisclosed, per a November 19, 2025 Jon Peddie Research report.
Did Esperanto Technologies ever make money selling its AI chips?
No confirmed revenue was ever publicly disclosed by Esperanto. It shipped evaluation systems via partner Penguin Computing starting around 2021-2022 and relied on an online 'evaluate' request form rather than a direct sales team, per an October 28, 2025 postmortem.
How much funding did Esperanto Technologies raise before shutting down?
Esperanto raised a $58 million Series B in November 2018, bringing total funding to $63 million, with Western Digital among investors. No further funding rounds were confirmed after 2018, a seven-year gap before its July 2025 shutdown.
Who is Esperanto Technologies' biggest competitor?
Esperanto competed against entrenched incumbents Nvidia and AMD plus better-funded RISC-V AI chip peers like Groq, Cerebras, Tenstorrent, and SiFive. These rivals reportedly out-hired Esperanto's engineers with pay up to 4x higher before its July 2025 collapse.
What happened to Esperanto Technologies' RISC-V chip design after the shutdown?
Acquirer Ainekko open-sourced the ET-SoC-1's RTL, tools, and documentation under Apache License v2 in November 2025 via GitHub repos 'et-platform' and 'et-man,' repositioning the 1,088-core chip design toward edge, robotics, and IoT markets.
