The call

eVestment's reporting network keeps managers and consultants locked in together, while Nasdaq points it at AI licensing instead of letting AI or BlackRock's Preqin push take that role.

eVestment collects and sells standardized performance records from investment managers to consultants and institutional clients who need to find and compare funds. It is hard to copy because managers report data there specifically because consultants search there, and consultants search there because managers report data there, which creates a cycle that locks both sides in. The big risk is BlackRock, which bought a rival data company called Preqin in 2025 and is folding it into its Aladdin platform; if BlackRock wins enough manager and consultant business, they could make eVestment less essential. The one thing that could help eVestment is if its new plan to license its unique dataset to AI tools and data platforms actually works and generates real revenue beyond what it says in press releases.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generic LLMs and AI research agents. AI can draft RFPs and summarize manager comparisons, but it needs eVestment's self-reported data to work, so eVestment feeds it rather than losing to it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: BlackRock (via Preqin, folded into Aladdin). BlackRock paid $3.2B for Preqin in March 2025 and is wiring it into Aladdin, aiming at private-markets mandates where eVestment leans on Chronograph. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Managers report performance data because consultants search eVestment, and consultants search there because managers report, a loop 25 years deep that is hard to restart elsewhere.
What would change this call
BlackRock ships an Aladdin-Preqin product feature targeting consultant search or RFP workflows. Would show BlackRock is directly attacking eVestment's core workflow lock-in.
Nasdaq's Q2 2026 earnings (July 23, 2026) show Capital Access Platforms growth rate versus Q1's 11%. Slowing growth would signal weakening demand or reduced Nasdaq investment.
Independent (non-Nasdaq) reporting confirms eVestment's Snowflake/agentic data-licensing revenue. Would show AI-repositioning is real traction, not just announced marketing.

Questions people ask
Is eVestment profitable?
eVestment does not report standalone financials since it is folded into Nasdaq's Capital Access Platforms segment. That segment grew 11% YoY (10% organic) in Q1 2026, per Nasdaq's SEC filing dated April 23, 2026, suggesting healthy contribution to a profitable parent.
Who owns eVestment?
eVestment is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nasdaq, Inc. Nasdaq announced the acquisition on September 5, 2017 for $705 million in cash and debt, and the deal closed October 23, 2017. Prior to that it was privately held, backed by Insight Venture Partners.
Could AI replace eVestment?
Unlikely to fully replace it. eVestment's moat is proprietary, self-reported performance data from thousands of managers, not publicly scrapable. In October 2025 it launched AI-ready datasets via Snowflake, licensing data into AI workflows rather than being displaced by them.
Is BlackRock's Preqin eVestment's biggest competitor?
BlackRock acquired Preqin for $3.2 billion in March 2025, folding it into the Aladdin platform, and is contesting the private-markets frontier where eVestment relies on its Chronograph affiliate. No evidence yet shows Preqin taking core eVestment consultant-search accounts.
How much institutional data does eVestment cover?
As of January 2026, eVestment's own data-coverage page claims (vendor-reported) 2,613 traditional managers, 2,191 hedge funds, $132.65 trillion in represented firm AUM, 16,108 private-markets GP profiles, and 80,972 fund profiles.
Does Morningstar compete with or use eVestment?
Both. Morningstar owns rival PitchBook, but it has also licensed eVestment data into Morningstar Direct since November 18, 2013, showing a long-running coopetition relationship rather than a clean rivalry.
