The call

Marketplace rides on Facebook's existing users and trust rather than fighting for new ones, and no rival app or AI product currently pulls buyers or sellers away from it.

Facebook Marketplace lets people buy and sell used items to each other using Facebook accounts. It is hard to copy because Facebook already has billions of users who trust each other through their real identities, and those users see listings right in the app they use anyway, so there is no reason to switch to separate apps like OfferUp or Mercari. Craigslist used to make over $1 billion a year but fell to $300 million as Marketplace took its business. The main thing that could change this is if courts force Facebook to spend a lot of money verifying every seller or reviewing every listing to stop scams, which would slow down how fast the platform works.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Meta's own AI now writes listings and replies to buyers for sellers, making Marketplace easier to use, not something eating it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No large rival is pulling buyers or sellers away; Craigslist has been shrinking for years while Marketplace grew. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 3 billion Facebook users already logged in with real names and Messenger built in, so buyers and sellers show up for free with instant trust.
What would change this call
Outcome of Consumer Federation, Santa Clara County, and Thailand scam-ad lawsuits against Marketplace. Would show whether legal costs force identity-verification mandates that slow seller growth.
Meta's Q2/Q3 2026 earnings commentary on Family of Apps and capex allocation toward AI vs Marketplace. Would show if Meta deprioritizes Marketplace engineering resources.
Any EU Digital Markets Act ruling reinstating Marketplace gatekeeper obligations post-June 2026 appeal. Would show regulatory pressure forcing unbundling from Facebook's social graph.

Questions people ask
Is Facebook Marketplace profitable?
Meta does not disclose Marketplace-specific revenue or profit figures. Company-wide, Meta posted $56.31 billion in Q1 2026 revenue, up 33.1% year-over-year, but Marketplace's individual contribution to that total remains undisclosed as of 2026.
Could AI replace Facebook Marketplace?
Unlikely. Meta itself shipped AI auto-listing, auto-reply, and seller-profile summary tools to Marketplace on March 12, 2026, automating seller tasks, but no outside AI can replicate Marketplace's built-in access to Facebook's 3 billion plus user social graph and trust signals.
Who owns Facebook Marketplace?
Facebook Marketplace is wholly owned and operated by Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META), which had a market capitalization of approximately $1.63 trillion as of July 2026. There is no separate entity, valuation, or funding history for Marketplace itself.
Is Facebook Marketplace beating Craigslist?
Yes. Craigslist's revenue fell from $1.04 billion in 2018 to $302 million in 2025, a decline partly attributed to competition from Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Mercari, even as Craigslist retained about 142.7 million global monthly visitors in 2025.
What is Facebook Marketplace's biggest competitor?
eBay is the largest scaled rival with 135 to 136 million active buyers as of 2025 to 2026, followed by OfferUp, Nextdoor, Mercari, and a fading Craigslist. No competitor has replicated Marketplace's built-in Facebook social graph and free distribution as of 2026.
Does Facebook Marketplace have a scam problem?
Yes. FTC data cited in May 2026 shows Facebook-originated scam losses hit $794 million in 2025, the highest of any social platform, prompting class actions from the Consumer Federation of America (April 21, 2026) and Santa Clara County (May 11, 2026).
