The call

Five9 is profitable and growing, but it is fighting bigger rivals and an AI pricing shift at the same time, with a brand new leadership team deciding the outcome.

Five9 sells software that powers customer service teams for big companies, handling phone calls and chats across the world. It is hard to switch because of complicated phone rules in each country and connections to other business software, but Salesforce, Amazon, and other tech giants are now offering the same thing and winning new customers. The real threat is that artificial intelligence voice agents could replace human workers entirely, which would break Five9's business model that charges per employee, so the company is trying to switch to charging based on what customers use instead, but nobody knows yet if that will actually make money.

Why
01
AI pressure: Voice AI agents built from OpenAI, ElevenLabs, and Deepgram tools. AI voice agents can replace human seats Five9 bills for, so it is racing to sell AI usage instead of seats before that shrinks revenue. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Salesforce (backing Genesys), Amazon Connect, NiCE, Cisco. Bigger, better funded rivals are winning new enterprise deals while Five9 defends its existing base. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep telephony compliance across 140+ countries and CRM integrations make ripping Five9 out costly and slow.
What would change this call
Five9's DBNR in Q2 2026 earnings (~July 30, 2026) versus current 105%. Rising DBNR shows AI-pricing pivot working; falling toward 100% shows customers shrinking spend or leaving.
Whether a fourth layoff round is confirmed after Feb 2026 warning. Continued cuts would show ongoing financial or strategic stress beyond the C-suite overhaul.
Any acquisition offer or formal sale process given Anson Funds' board seat and ~$2B market cap. Would confirm Five9 is being treated as a takeover target rather than a standalone compounder.

Questions people ask
Is Five9 profitable in 2026?
Five9 returned to GAAP profitability in FY2025 with net income of $39.4 million, versus a loss of $12.8 million in 2024. Q1 2026 revenue was $305.3 million, up 9% YoY, with adjusted EBITDA margin expanding to 24.4% from 18.8% a year earlier, as of April 30, 2026.
Is Five9 doing layoffs?
Yes. Five9 cut about 7% of staff in August 2024, about 4% (roughly 120 employees) in May 2025, and laid off three senior executives in February 2026 with sources saying broader cuts were pending, per reporting dated February 21, 2026.
Could AI replace Five9?
Five9 orchestrates third-party AI (Deepgram for speech recognition, ElevenLabs for voice, OpenAI for language) inside its own Voice AI Agents product launched June 22, 2026, rather than being replaced. But AI-driven self-service is eroding its per-seat pricing model, forcing a consumption-pricing pivot.
Who is Five9's biggest competitor?
NiCE, Genesys (backed by a reported $1.5 billion Salesforce investment), Amazon Connect, and Cisco are named Leaders alongside Five9 in Gartner's 2025 CCaaS Magic Quadrant, dated October 19, 2025. NiCE landed multiple nine-figure enterprise deals in 2025.
Who owns Five9?
Five9 is an independent public company on Nasdaq (FIVN), market cap about $1.97 billion as of July 21, 2026. Zoom's announced $14.7 billion acquisition of Five9 was terminated in October 2021 after shareholders voted it down amid a DOJ national security review.
What is Five9's customer retention rate?
Five9 reported a Dollar-Based Net Retention Rate of 105% as of December 31, 2025, per its 10-K. This is viewed as a key indicator of whether its shift to AI-consumption pricing is offsetting per-seat revenue erosion from voice AI agents.
