The call

Flipkart's core marketplace keeps its scale and logistics edge in India, while quick-commerce rivals and AI-driven shopping test its margins ahead of a planned IPO.

Flipkart is India's largest online shopping platform, controlling about half of all e-commerce sales and owning much of its own delivery network through a company called Ekart. It is very hard for competitors like Amazon to copy because Flipkart built relationships with hundreds of thousands of sellers and serves 230 million customers from a logistics system that took years to create. However, a newer type of shopping called quick-commerce (same-day or hours-fast delivery of everyday items) is run better by rivals like Blinkit and Zepto, and Flipkart's version called Minutes is losing money and customers; if this gap widens by 2027, it will hurt the company's value when it eventually goes public.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Gemini AI Mode (agentic checkout). Gemini's agentic shopping could route purchases straight to sellers, bypassing Flipkart's app and ad revenue. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Blinkit (Eternal/Zomato). Blinkit already holds 45-50% of quick-commerce, keeping Flipkart Minutes from scaling before its IPO. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Ekart's last-mile network across 19,000 pincodes, 450,000 sellers, and Walmart's capital back Flipkart's core marketplace.

Questions people ask
Is Flipkart profitable in 2026?
No. Flipkart India's consolidated loss widened to ₹5,189 crore in FY25 (year ended March 2025) from ₹4,248.3 crore, even as revenue grew 17.3% to ₹82,787 crore. Myntra was the only group unit profitable, at ₹548 crore, per September 2025 filings.
Who owns Flipkart?
Walmart is Flipkart's majority owner, having acquired roughly 77% for $16 billion in 2018; Wikipedia lists Walmart's stake at approximately 85% as of 2026. Google also invested $350 million in May 2024 at a $36 billion valuation.
Could AI replace Flipkart?
Unlikely for its core business. Flipkart runs 250+ AI models internally (as of July 2026), but its moat rests on physical infrastructure: Ekart logistics covering ~19,000 pin codes with ~90% self-fulfilled orders and 450,000 seller relationships, which AI models alone cannot replicate.
Is Amazon beating Flipkart in India?
No, not overall. As of May 2026, Flipkart holds an estimated 50-60% of India's e-commerce GMV versus Amazon's 25-30%, and dominates electronics at 63-64% share versus Amazon's 35-36%, per ICICI Securities and CLSA data.
Is Flipkart going public?
Flipkart is preparing an India-listed IPO, targeting a $40-70 billion valuation with a possible $8-10 billion raise, indicatively late 2026 or early 2027. Bank talks began around March 2026, and it completed a reverse domicile shift from Singapore to India that same month.
Did Flipkart have layoffs recently?
Yes. In its March 2026 annual performance review, Flipkart cut roughly 300-500 employees, about 3-4% of headcount, a larger reduction than the usual 1-2% while it continued senior hiring ahead of its planned IPO.
