The call

Forge has credible founders and no product yet, entering a welding-automation race where Path Robotics and Machina Labs already have customers, funding, and data.

Forge Robotics builds AI-powered robotic welding systems aimed at factories that need to automate their welding work. The company is hard to copy in one narrow way (the AI programming takes real expertise), but it faces two serious rivals already shipping products: Path Robotics has a data engine that learns from every weld it does, and Machina Labs has raised ten times more money and is already running 19 systems at major customers like Toyota and Lockheed. Forge has no paying customers yet, no special welding data of its own, and no narrow market it owns completely, which means either winning a first major customer before mid-2026 or watching its technology slowly become standard industry knowledge could determine whether it survives to compete.

Why
01
AI pressure: Path Robotics (Obsidian neural net). Path already runs a live weld-data flywheel and cut one customer job from 150 to 9 man-hours; Forge has no data yet to compete on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Machina Labs. Machina has $124M, 19 deployed cells, and customers like Toyota and Lockheed while Forge is still pre-product. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Founders know steel fabrication and automotive vision firsthand, but that only helps if they narrow fast to a niche the funded players ignore.
What would change this call
Forge's laser-welding partner status stays 'exploring' rather than a signed deployment by mid-2027. would show Forge cannot convert technical credibility into paying customers.
Path Robotics or Machina Labs announces a retrofit or SMB-focused product line. would show funded rivals closing off Forge's only plausible niche.
Forge's July 2026 product launch slips or ships without a named customer. would show execution lagging its own timeline while peers keep adding logos.
Key numbers
  • Forge raised about $700K total (2026-07-02)
  • Machina Labs raised $124M (2026-04-30)
  • Machina Labs runs 19 deployed cells (2026-05-27)
Named risks
  • Pre-revenue with no signed customers as of July 2026 while product launch remains only a target date. Severity: high
  • Vastly outfunded by direct peers, $700K versus Machina Labs' $124M round. Severity: high
  • Core computer-vision welding techniques diffusing through open academic research, eroding differentiation. Severity: medium
  • Positioning expanded from narrow welding retrofit to broad 'modular autonomous factories' before core product is proven. Severity: medium
  • No public API, SDK, or developer documentation as of July 2026, indicating minimal platform lock-in. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Forge Robotics profitable?
No. As of July 2026 Forge Robotics is pre-revenue and pre-product, still targeting its first commercial launch and describing partnership talks with laser welding vendors as exploratory rather than signed, per the Irish Times, July 2, 2026.
Could AI replace welders because of Forge Robotics?
Forge's own product aims to automate weld-seam detection and robot programming that skilled welders currently do manually, but as of July 2026 it has no shipped product or named customers, so any labor displacement remains speculative, not demonstrated.
Who is Forge Robotics' biggest competitor?
Path Robotics and Machina Labs. Path has a proprietary 'Obsidian' neural net with a documented case cutting welding labor from 150 to 9 man-hours (July 2026); Machina Labs raised $124M and runs 19 deployed cells with Toyota and Lockheed Martin as of April-May 2026.
How much funding has Forge Robotics raised?
About $700,000 total as of July 2, 2026, per the Irish Times, combining Y Combinator's standard $500K deal (F25 batch) with angel investment. CTO Robert Cormican said the company is looking to launch a seed round later in 2026.
Who owns Forge Robotics?
Forge Robotics is privately founder-owned by CEO Eoin Cobbe and CTO Robert Cormican, with no parent company or disclosed valuation as of July 2026; it has taken YC's standard funding plus angel money, per the Irish Times, July 2, 2026.
Has Forge Robotics shipped a product yet?
No. As of the November 10, 2025 YC launch post and the July 2, 2026 Irish Times profile, Forge was still targeting its first product launch for July 2026, with no signed customers publicly named at that point.
