The call

GeneDx still leads rare-disease sequencing by a wide margin, but a guidance cut, a stock crash, and Natera's new test have put its financial story under real strain.

GeneDx runs the largest genetic testing service for rare diseases, sequencing patient DNA to find disease-causing mutations. The company has built up a huge library of over one million sequenced genomes and strong relationships with insurance companies and doctors over 25 years, which makes it hard for competitors to copy quickly. However, insurance companies are paying less for whole-genome tests than for the simpler exome tests GeneDx relied on, which is shrinking profits even as more patients get tested. Natera just launched a competing test called Zenith in 2026, and GeneDx's stock crashed 49% in May 2026 after missing financial targets, raising questions about whether the company can turn around its money-losing operations.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. GeneDx bet on AI itself with Fabric Genomics, then wrote off 94% of that bet, so AI is feeding costs, not yet eating share. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Natera. Natera shipped its Zenith rare-disease test in 2026 with its own MyOme genomic dataset, aiming straight at GeneDx's core market. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Over 1 million sequenced exomes, 2.5 million tests, and 25 years of payer and clinician relationships that are hard to rebuild fast.
What would change this call
GeneDx Q2/Q3 2026 earnings show whether revised guidance of $475-490M holds. Confirms whether the May 2026 guidance cut stabilizes or deteriorates further.
Natera reports Zenith test volume or revenue traction in 2026 quarterly filings. Would show whether Natera is converting its dataset into real share gains against GeneDx.
Outcome of securities class-action lead-plaintiff process after August 3, 2026 deadline. Indicates financial and reputational exposure from the guidance-cut litigation.

Questions people ask
Is GeneDx profitable in 2026?
Not yet on a GAAP basis. GeneDx posted a Q1 2026 GAAP net loss of $63.3M (adjusted loss $8.2M) and cut full-year 2026 guidance about 12%, from $540-555M to $475-490M, on May 4, 2026. Management targets a return to profitability in Q3 2026, but that remains unproven.
Could AI replace GeneDx?
Unlikely soon. AI tools like GeneDx's own Multiscore (launched March 2025, 83.5% top-10 gene-ranking accuracy) automate variant interpretation, but GeneDx's moat is its proprietary GeneDx Infinity dataset of over 1 million sequenced exomes/genomes plus 25 years of payer and clinical integration, which a standalone AI vendor cannot replicate.
Who is GeneDx's biggest competitor?
Natera is the most credible emerging threat, having shipped a competing rare-disease genomic test called Zenith (with MyOme) in 2026 and holding roughly a $21B market cap versus Illumina's ~$13B as of mid-2025. Labcorp and Quest have distribution scale but lack GeneDx's rare-disease bioinformatics depth.
Who owns GeneDx?
GeneDx Holdings (Nasdaq: WGS) is publicly traded with no single controlling owner. It emerged from Sema4 Holdings' April 29, 2022 acquisition of GeneDx from OPKO Health for $150M cash plus 80 million shares, alongside a $200M PIPE that included Pfizer as an investor.
Why did GeneDx stock crash in May 2026?
GeneDx shares fell about 49% on May 5, 2026, wiping out over $900M in market cap, after management cut full-year 2026 revenue guidance roughly 12% (to $475-490M from $540-555M), citing unfavorable genome-versus-exome reimbursement mix. This triggered securities class actions with an August 3, 2026 lead-plaintiff deadline.
What happened with GeneDx's Fabric Genomics acquisition?
GeneDx acquired Fabric Genomics, an AI genomic interpretation company, for up to $33M cash in May 2025 (up to $51M with milestones). By May 2026 the unit had underperformed, and GeneDx recorded a $31.2M impairment, roughly 94% of the cash paid, tied partly to a $2.5M revenue miss.
