The call

GitLab still grows fast and keeps most customers spending more, but it is cutting staff, guiding AI revenue to near zero this year, and fighting GitHub on Microsoft's home turf.

GitLab sells tools that help teams write, test, and secure code. It makes over a billion dollars a year and companies stick with it because switching away is painful, especially for banks and governments that need tight controls and on-site software. But Microsoft owns GitHub, which already does many of the same things and has way more money to improve it, and simpler AI tools like Cursor are making it easier for programmers to write code alone without paying for fancy platforms. The key question is whether GitLab's new AI agent product can make enough money to replace the programmers and budget it cuts in 2026, or whether customers will slowly shrink their teams and stop paying as much.

Why
01
AI pressure: GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and standalone AI coding agents. AI agents write and review code directly, shrinking the per-seat model GitLab still depends on for most revenue. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: GitHub (Microsoft-owned). GitHub shows up by name on GitLab's own earnings calls as the deal it keeps losing against, backed by Microsoft's distribution and cash. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Regulated enterprises stay on GitLab for self-managed, compliance-heavy, single-tenant deployments GitHub doesn't match as easily.
What would change this call
GitLab's NRR figure in FY2028 quarterly reports compared to current 117%. Falling NRR would show customers shrinking their spend or leaving for rivals like GitHub.
Whether Duo Agent Platform shows disclosed material revenue by FY2028. Continued near-zero revenue would show AI monetization is lagging usage and competitors.
Outcome of rumored Datadog takeover talks reported Oct-Nov 2025. A confirmed deal or its collapse would clarify GitLab's independent viability and valuation.

  • Net retention at 117%, still above 100% (2026-06-03)
  • About 21% of workforce cut across two 2026 rounds (2026-06-03)
Named risks
  • Duo Agent Platform guided to contribute no material revenue in FY2027 despite GA. Severity: high
  • Two rounds of layoffs in 2026 totaling roughly 21% of workforce signal execution strain. Severity: high
  • Price sensitive customer cohort (~20% of ARR) under macro pressure could erode retention. Severity: medium
  • Legacy securities fraud class action (N.D. Cal. case 24-cv-06244) remains unresolved. Severity: low
  • GitHub/Microsoft resourcing advantage in head to head competitive deals. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is GitLab profitable in 2026?
Not yet on a sustained basis. GitLab's CFO Jessica Ross said profitability is expected to trough in Q3 FY2027 due to post restructuring investment timing, as stated on the Q1 FY2027 earnings call on June 3, 2026, meaning near term margins stay pressured despite $264.2M Q1 revenue.
Did GitLab lay off employees in 2026?
Yes, twice. GitLab cut about 7% of its workforce and flattened management on May 19, 2026, then confirmed a further roughly 14% (about 350 employees) alongside Q1 FY2027 earnings on June 2 to 3, 2026, both framed as agentic era restructuring.
Could AI replace GitLab?
AI threatens GitLab's per seat pricing since coding agents from GitHub Copilot and Cursor commoditize basic code generation, but GitLab argues coding is only about 20% of the software lifecycle. Management guided Duo Agent Platform will add no material revenue in FY2027 despite GA on January 15, 2026.
Who is GitLab's biggest competitor?
GitHub, owned by Microsoft, is GitLab's primary head to head rival and was cited by name on GitLab's own Q1 FY2027 earnings call regarding competitive win rates, discussed in coverage published June 9, 2026.
Who owns GitLab and is it being acquired?
GitLab is publicly traded on Nasdaq as GTLB, having IPO'd October 14, 2021 at an ~$11 billion valuation. Recurring unconfirmed takeover speculation names Datadog as a possible acquirer at over $60 per share, most recently reported November 10, 2025, with no deal confirmed as of July 2026.
Is GitLab's AI product Duo Agent Platform making money?
Early stage. Paid AI consumption run-rate exceeded $20 million and Duo Agent Platform generated more net new ARR in Q1 FY2027 than prior Duo products combined per quarter, per July 20, 2026 reporting, but management guided no material FY2027 revenue contribution as of June 3, 2026.
