The call

Workspace keeps adding paying seats and stays wired into Google's own AI, while Microsoft 365 still holds more of the enterprise market outright.

Google Workspace is a suite of online tools for email, documents, spreadsheets, and video meetings that competes directly with Microsoft 365. It is hard to replace because millions of people and companies already use it, their files live in Google's system, and Google builds its own artificial intelligence (Gemini) to power the software rather than buying it from someone else. The real question is whether Microsoft's AI assistant (Copilot) will convince enough new businesses to switch over the next year or two, or whether new government rules about Google's power to bundle services will force Google to change how it sells Workspace.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Google owns Gemini and builds it into Workspace directly, so AI here is fuel, not a rival eating the product. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft 365 and Copilot. Microsoft still holds most Fortune 500 seats and a bigger share of enterprise suites, with Copilot live and competing seat by seat. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Billions of Gmail, Drive, and Classroom users already locked into the workflow, plus Google's own data and model feeding Workspace AI directly.

Questions people ask
Is Google Workspace profitable?
Google does not disclose Workspace revenue separately; it is folded into the Google Cloud segment. Workspace is cited as delivering double-digit growth from rising seat counts and ARPU, per industry reporting dated February 25, 2026, though no standalone profit figure is published.
Who is Google Workspace's biggest competitor?
Microsoft 365 is the dominant rival. A March 12, 2026 Gartner-based analysis found Microsoft 365 holds about 48% of the enterprise productivity-suite market versus Google Workspace's roughly 26%, though the two remain locked in a stable duopoly.
Could AI replace Google Workspace?
Unlikely to displace it: Google owns the Gemini model powering Workspace and launched Workspace Intelligence on April 22, 2026, which grounds Gemini in a user's own Gmail, Drive and Calendar data, deepening lock-in rather than exposing Workspace to external AI substitution.
Who owns Google Workspace?
Google Workspace is wholly owned by Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL), a public company. It is not a standalone entity; its revenue is reported inside Alphabet's Google Cloud segment rather than disclosed separately.
Is Google Workspace losing market share to Microsoft 365?
Estimates conflict. A March 12, 2026 Gartner-based analysis put Microsoft 365 at about 48% of enterprise seats versus Workspace's 26%, while Google describes Workspace as achieving double-digit growth from rising seat counts, per reporting dated February 25, 2026.
When did Google Workspace add Gemini AI features for free?
Since January 2025, Google folded most Gemini AI features into its base Business and Enterprise subscription tiers at no added cost, ending the prior paid add-on model, according to Workspace pricing coverage updated July 9, 2026.
