Granular
Corteva's free farm data tool, once a startup SaaS company, now stripped down to sales support.
Granular went from a funded startup to a free marketing widget inside Corteva, with its next owner and budget still undecided ahead of the 2026 corporate split.
Granular once sold farm management software but was dismantled by its parent company Corteva starting in 2022, with its main product sold off and its team cut by roughly 100 people. What remains is Granular Insights, a free tool Corteva uses to help its sales reps talk to farmers, not a real business. Copying it is getting easier because John Deere (which already owns Operations Center and has 500,000+ tractors feeding it data) and Bayer (Climate FieldView) are both adding artificial intelligence that can automatically pull together farm data, predict yields, and suggest where to plant seeds, which is exactly what Granular Insights does. The one thing that could change everything: in late 2026, Corteva is splitting into two separate companies, and nobody knows yet whether either one will keep Granular, fund it, or let it die.
Post-split parent announces budget or headcount commitment to Granular Insights. Would indicate the tool is being invested in rather than left as a marketing freebie.
Continued WARN Act layoff filings at Corteva through mid-2026 naming Granular staff. Would confirm the team is still shrinking rather than stabilizing.
- 306 Corteva layoffs since 2019, near-monthly
- 57 Granular staff cut in SaaS wind-down
- Deere holds ~11% NA crop-monitoring share
- Corteva Q4 2026 split leaves Granular Insights with no named owner or budget.
- No AI features in Granular Insights while Deere and Bayer market AI-driven analytics.
- Ongoing WARN Act layoffs at Corteva through mid-2026 could touch remaining Granular staff.
- Parent Corteva faces unresolved FTC antitrust suit and Bayer litigation that could divert resources.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| John Deere (Operations Center) | losing to | Holds 11% NA crop-monitoring share in 2025 and claims AI-driven 5-10% yield lifts across 500k+ machines (Feb 2026) |
| Bayer (Climate FieldView) | losing to | Marketed as AI/big-data-driven precision-ag platform vs Granular's non-AI redesign as of 2025-26 |
| Traction Ag | losing to | Acquired Granular's own core SaaS product Nov 11, 2022 and now competes as standalone farm-management platform |
- Is Granular still an independent company?
- No. Granular Inc. has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Corteva Agriscience since September 2017. Corteva sold its core SaaS product to Traction Ag in November 2022 and shut down Granular Agronomy in August 2022, leaving only the free Granular Insights tool.
- Is Granular profitable?
- No standalone financials exist. Granular Insights is a free tool with no subscription fee, monetized indirectly through Corteva seed and crop-protection sales rather than software revenue, per Corteva's own December 16, 2022 statement on its digital strategy.
- Could AI replace Granular's product?
- Granular Insights' core functions, equipment-data aggregation and yield/ROI diagnostics, are the kind of tasks AI analytics engines already automate. Rival Climate FieldView markets AI/big-data features, and Deere claims 5-10% yield lifts via AI (PwC, Feb 27, 2026); Granular shows no comparable AI feature as of mid-2026.
- Who owns Granular now?
- Corteva Agriscience (NYSE: CTVA) has owned Granular since acquiring it as DowDuPont in September 2017. Corteva itself is splitting into two public companies, New Corteva and Vylor, targeted for Q4 2026, with no public statement on which entity retains Granular Insights as of June 2026.
- Who is Granular's biggest competitor?
- John Deere's Operations Center (about 11% of North America crop-monitoring market as of 2025, per GM Insights) and Bayer's Climate FieldView are the dominant incumbents; Traction Ag, which bought Granular's own SaaS product in November 2022, is also a direct rival.
- What happened to Granular's original SaaS product?
- Corteva sold the core Granular Business farm-financial-management SaaS product to Traction Ag on November 11, 2022, excluding the Granular brand and the free Granular Insights tool, formally ending Granular's paid software model.
