The call

Graphite's workflow lock-in is real, but its future now runs through Cursor's roadmap, and Cursor's roadmap runs through Bugbot, not Graphite's brand.

Graphite built a code-review tool that some big companies like Shopify and Vercel stuck with because of how it handles multiple pull requests at once. The problem is that Cursor bought Graphite in late 2025 and is merging it into a bigger product, so Graphite may stop being its own thing. Even before the acquisition, competitors like CodeRabbit were better at finding bugs in code (catching 46 percent of bugs versus Graphite's 18 percent), and giants like GitHub and Microsoft could easily copy Graphite's features. The big question now is whether Cursor keeps Graphite separate and fixes its bug-detection gap, or folds it into Cursor's other products and lets the Graphite name disappear.

Why
01
AI pressure: CodeRabbit, Greptile, Cursor Bugbot. Graphite's own AI reviewer catches 18% of bugs in tests versus 46-48% for CodeRabbit and Macroscope, well behind on the metric that matters. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: GitHub (Microsoft). GitHub owns the PR surface and already ships Copilot review; nothing stops it from copying stacked-PR and merge queue features. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep workflow lock-in at Shopify, Snowflake, Vercel, Notion, and Asana keeps engineers inside the merge queue day to day.
What would change this call
Whether Graphite remains a distinct branded product or folds into Cursor Bugbot by end of 2026. Shows if Graphite's workflow lock-in survives integration or gets absorbed and diluted.
Graphite's Diamond/Agent bug-detection score in next independent benchmark test. Shows whether it closes the gap with CodeRabbit and Macroscope or stays far behind.
GitHub Copilot shipping native stacked-PR or merge-queue support within 12 months. Would show the incumbent closing Graphite's core workflow moat.
