Greensill
Collapsed supply chain finance firm, filed for insolvency in 2021, now just estates in administration.
Greensill is not a company anymore, it is a set of insolvent estates being picked apart by lawsuits and creditor recoveries.
Greensill Capital was a company that lent money to businesses based on invoices they expected to receive in the future, but the business failed because it relied on invoices that often did not actually exist and lost a huge customer. The company is not hard to replace because banks like JPMorgan and Citibank already do this type of lending better and more safely, which is exactly what happened when JPMorgan took over the invoice financing business that Greensill depended on. Right now the only thing happening is that lawyers are trying to recover money for people who lost investments through lawsuits against the UK government and other parties, but this will not bring the company back to life.
Ruling on Credit Suisse Virtuoso's $440m Section 423 claim vs SoftBank and Greensill liquidators. Would show whether more funds flow to creditors, not equity holders.
Trial date and outcome for German prosecutors' charges against three former Greensill Bank staff. Would show legal accountability but no operational restart.
- Filed for insolvency 8 March 2021
- SoftBank valued stake at ~$4bn in 2019
- GFG Alliance owed ~$587.2m to the estate
- UK administration may extend indefinitely past September 2026 with no equity recovery for stakeholders.
- Ongoing German criminal proceedings against former Greensill Bank staff could reveal further regulatory failures.
- Unresolved $440m Credit Suisse Section 423 claim against SoftBank and Greensill Liquidators could extend litigation for years.
- £330m lawsuit against UK government outcome is uncertain and does not benefit equity holders even if won.

- Is Greensill Capital still operating in 2026?
- No. Greensill Capital filed for insolvency in the UK and Australia on 8 March 2021, with its German bank shut by BaFin the same month. As of mid 2026 it exists only as insolvent estates under Grant Thornton administration, with the UK process expected to extend past September 2026.
- Could I still invest in or join Greensill?
- No, Greensill has zero operating headcount and no going-concern business as of 2026. It peaked at just over 1,000 employees in early 2021 before collapsing; today only administrators and lawyers remain engaged with the insolvent estate.
- What caused Greensill Capital to collapse?
- Greensill's structure fell apart within a week in March 2021 after trade credit insurers pulled coverage on its receivables financing, exposing risky 'future receivables' lending and a roughly $5bn concentrated exposure to client GFG Alliance.
- Who is Greensill's biggest competitive loss tied to its collapse?
- Taulia, Greensill's largest client channel, replaced Greensill's financing with JPMorgan Chase during the March 2021 collapse, which also sank a proposed rescue sale to Apollo Global Management's Athene unit.
- Did SoftBank lose money on Greensill?
- Yes. SoftBank's Vision Fund invested $800m in May 2019 and a further $655m in October 2019 at roughly a $4bn valuation, then wrote its stake down to near zero by late 2020, ahead of Greensill's March 2021 insolvency.
- Is there any money left for Greensill creditors?
- Some. UK administrators recovered £41m for creditors by October 2024, and Greensill's auditor paid a £71m settlement to administrators reported April 2026, against unsecured creditor claims estimated at over $1.6bn.
