The call

Hana's banking license keeps it alive and profitable, but its thin securities business leaves it stuck behind KB and Shinhan in the ranking that matters for growth.

Hana Financial Group takes deposits, makes loans, and offers investment services as one of South Korea's five major banks. It is very hard to replace because the government only allows a small number of banks to operate, and AI cannot legally take deposits or hold customer money the way a licensed bank can. The real question is whether Hana can catch up to rivals like KB and Shinhan in fee-based businesses like stock trading and wealth management, since it currently makes a much smaller share of profit from those areas than its competitors do.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI could automate advisory and back-office work, but Hana's licensed deposit and lending core stays outside AI's reach for now. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: KB Financial Group. KB's securities arm already generates 33.9% of group profit versus Hana's 6.4%, widening the fee-income gap between Korea's top two banks. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A licensed banking seat inside Korea's closed Big Five oligopoly blocks new entrants from touching deposits, capital, or lending.
What would change this call
Hana's securities/nonbank profit share vs KB/Shinhan over next 8 quarters. Shows whether Hana closes the fee-income gap or stays perennial #3.
NTS special tax audit outcome (initiated May 2026). Would reveal if leadership faces criminal referral, threatening trust moat.
KB or Shinhan launch of a deposit or wealth-management product aimed at Hana's client base. Would show a same-industry rival actually taking Hana's core customers.

Questions people ask
What is Hana Financial Group's biggest risk?
The main watch-item is Hana's thin non-banking business, with non-banking profit at just 6.4% of group income versus 33.9% at KB Financial Group as of April 7, 2026. KB and Shinhan continue pulling ahead in brokerage and wealth-management fee income, a gap worth checking again when Hana reports full-year 2026 results by February 1, 2027.
Is Hana Financial Group in financial trouble?
No, Hana posted a record FY2025 net income of KRW 4.0 trillion, up 7.1% year over year, and H1 2026 fee income grew 37.7% year over year (Jul 23, 2026 reporting window). Q2 2026 net income dipped 1.4% quarter over quarter to KRW 1,192.8 billion, but 2025 ROE still rose to 9.19%, up 7bps year over year.
Who are Hana Financial Group's biggest competitors?
Within Korea's Big Five, Hana trails KB Financial Group, which posted KRW 3.88 trillion in H1 2026 profit and far greater non-banking diversification, and Shinhan Financial Group, which posted KRW 3.44 trillion in the same period. NH NongHyup sits behind Hana at KRW 1.78 trillion, while Woori Financial Group is rebuilding its securities and insurance arms to close the gap, as of the July 2026 assessment.
Is Hana Financial Group at risk from AI?
Little apparent AI displacement risk exists, since Hana Bank built its own generative AI staff chatbot and Hana Securities launched an AI customer bot, using AI as an internal tool rather than being replaced by it. Our July 2026 assessment found this reflects a high bar for outside disruption.
Can digital-only banks like KakaoBank take Hana's market share?
The threat is assessed as blocked for now, since Hana holds a statutory banking license, deposit base, and AML infrastructure that unlicensed digital platforms cannot fully replicate. Our July 2026 assessment found this combination, spanning banking, securities, and insurance under one group, supports its position as a leader among peers assessed.
What should I watch next for Hana Financial Group?
Two dated checkpoints matter: Hana's full-year 2026 consolidated net income report, due by February 1, 2027, will be measured against its prior KRW 4.0 trillion record. Separately, its commercial won-stablecoin project with Dunamu is expected to move beyond pilot stage by January 1, 2027, tied to passage of Korea's Digital Asset Framework Act.
