The call

Hippo is turning profitable with cheaper AI-run claims, but its growth still leans on a Progressive partnership that Progressive itself could end or replace.

Hippo Insurance sells home insurance online and uses AI to decide which customers to take and how much to charge, trying to undercut old companies like State Farm and Allstate. The hard part is that home insurance is heavily regulated and the biggest, richest insurers can always copy what Hippo does, especially since Progressive already partners with Hippo but could just build the same thing itself instead. The one thing that could change everything: whether Hippo can stay profitable when hurricanes and wildfires hit in late 2026, and whether Progressive stays a real partner or becomes a competitor.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Licensing and capital rules block pure AI entrants from writing home insurance, so AI mainly helps Hippo cut its own claims costs. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Progressive, State Farm, Allstate. Progressive controls the HomeQuote Explorer funnel driving Hippo's growth and could redirect it to its own underwriting or a rival. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. State licensing, capital rules, and Hippo's underwriting and claims software make fast copying costly, but not impossible for giants.
What would change this call
Progressive expands, renegotiates, or winds down the HomeQuote Explorer distribution deal in 2026. Shows whether Hippo's key growth channel is durable or controlled by a partner with its own competing incentives.
Hippo's combined ratio during Q3-Q4 2026 hurricane/wildfire season stays below or rises above 105%. Shows whether underwriting improvement holds under real catastrophe exposure or reverses like prior CAT quarters.
Net premium retention trend after falling from 48% to 31%. Shows whether customer growth is durable or driven by churn-prone, price-sensitive switching.

Questions people ask
Is Hippo Insurance profitable in 2026?
Yes on a limited basis: Hippo posted its fourth consecutive profitable quarter in Q1 2026 with $7M net income on $332M GWP, following $58M FY2025 net income. But underwriting alone is still unprofitable, with FY2026 combined ratio guided at 103-105% as of April 30, 2026.
Who owns Hippo Insurance?
Hippo Holdings Inc. is a public company on NYSE under ticker HIPO, market cap about $728M as of July 22, 2026. Largest known holders are Capital Research & Management (~9.65%) and BlackRock Fund Advisors (~5.02%), per filings referenced March 13, 2026; no single controlling owner exists.
Could AI replace Hippo Insurance's claims and service jobs?
Hippo already deploys AI for this: Clara handles claims intake (launched April 8, 2026) and Hannah handles 100% of inbound service calls as of May 28, 2026. Management says current staffing could absorb a 30-35% volume increase without adding headcount, per the same April 2026 announcement.
Is Progressive a competitor or partner to Hippo Insurance?
Both. Since March 19, 2026, Progressive distributes Hippo policies via its HomeQuote Explorer across eight states, and Hippo called the rollout 'exceeding expectations' on its April 30, 2026 earnings call. But Progressive could replicate or exit the deal at any time, making it a rented channel, not owned distribution.
Has Hippo's stock recovered since its 2021 SPAC listing?
No. As of July 22, 2026, Hippo trades around $27.93, down over 95% from its all-time high of $270.41 set shortly after its August 2021 SPAC merger with Reinvent Technology Partners Z, despite recent profitability.
What is Hippo Insurance doing about catastrophe and wildfire risk?
After roughly $45M in Q1 2025 wildfire losses that pushed FY2025 combined ratio to 113%, Hippo closed a $100M 'Mountain Re' catastrophe bond around May 1, 2026 and restructured its 2026 reinsurance to a group program with a $513M first-event limit, effective June 2026.
