The call

IDfy's court-records database and India's data law keep foreign rivals out, while AI-run OCR and liveness checks turn its entry-level verification business into a price fight.

IDfy checks people's backgrounds and verifies their identities for banks and companies in India. It owns a huge database of court records that competitors cannot easily copy, and India's new privacy law requires the company to stay based in India, which keeps foreign rivals like Onfido and Jumio out. However, the basic identity checks that make up much of its business (scanning documents, checking if someone is really who they say they are, comparing faces) are becoming cheap and easy to copy, with at least ten other Indian companies offering the same thing. The big unknown is whether IDfy can shift from these commodity checks to harder-to-copy products that check credit and legal risk, and whether the Indian government will enforce its privacy rules on time in May 2027 or eventually build its own public identity system that makes private companies like IDfy unnecessary.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native KYC automation from HyperVerge, Signzy, Digitap using generative AI for OCR and liveness checks. Rivals automate the OCR/liveness/face-match doorway with AI, pushing prices down on the commodity layer IDfy still sells. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Onfido, Jumio, OneTrust. Global identity giants are kept out for now, DPDP Act rules require India incorporation and data storage they haven't built. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 330M+ licensed court records (CrimeCheck) plus DPDP's India-incorporation rule, which together lock out foreign platforms and copycats.
What would change this call
Whether DPDP Act enforcement begins on schedule May 13, 2027. Confirms the regulatory catalyst driving demand for IDfy's Privy compliance product.
Whether RBI, NPCI, or Account Aggregator builds public KYC or consent rails. Would show government infrastructure displacing private vendors like IDfy.
Whether Perfios/Karza or another rival launches a competing court-records database. Would challenge the proprietary data moat behind IDfy's OneRisk product.
Key numbers
  • FY25 revenue ₹188 crore, up from ₹145 crore FY24 (2025-07-18)
  • ₹476 crore Series F at ₹2,420 crore valuation (2026-02-13)
  • CrimeCheck holds 330M+ court records, 30M police records (2026-06-22)
Named risks
  • DPDP Act enforcement (set for May 2027) could be delayed, weakening near-term demand for Privy. Severity: medium
  • Commodity KYC verification layer (OCR, liveness, face-match) is matched feature-for-feature by 10+ funded rivals. Severity: high
  • Reported revenue figures diverge sharply across sources (filings ~₹188 Cr vs aggregator estimates near $192M), clouding scale claims. Severity: low
  • International expansion into 7-8 countries without inherited data or regulatory moats could dilute margins. Severity: medium
  • Government could build public KYC or consent-manager infrastructure that disintermediates private vendors like IDfy. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is IDfy profitable in 2026?
IDfy turned a net profit of about ₹1.6 crore in FY25 on operating revenue of ₹186 to 188.5 crore (about $21 to 22M), up from a loss the prior year, per Entrackr's July 18, 2025 report on its regulatory filings.
Who owns IDfy?
IDfy is privately held, founded in 2011 by Ashok Hariharan and Vineet Jawa (Ashok Hariharan is CEO). It is venture-backed, with a February 2026 Series F led by Neo Asset Management valuing it at roughly ₹2,420 crore (~$272M) post-money.
Is IDfy a safe company to join right now?
Headcount grew from 593 in May 2023 to 911 by June 2026 per Crustdata, the company posted its first net profit (₹1.6 crore) in FY25, and it closed two funding rounds in 2026 (Feb and June), suggesting active growth despite a crowded competitive field.
Could AI replace IDfy's verification business?
Basic document OCR, liveness detection, and face-match are commoditized and matched by 10+ rivals using off-the-shelf AI tooling, but IDfy's licensed CrimeCheck database of 330M+ Indian court records (2022 acquisition) and India-incorporation status under DPDP Act rules are not AI-replicable.
Who is IDfy's biggest competitor?
Perfios/Karza is cited as the most well-capitalized rival in India's KYC and lending-data space, per CBInsights (July 30, 2026). AuthBridge, HyperVerge, Signzy, Surepass, and Digitap contest the commodity verification layer directly.
Will IDfy go public and when?
IDfy stated in June 2026 that it aims to be 'IPO-ready' within 2-3 years, with a potential listing within five years, according to Biometric Update's June 22, 2026 report on its $23M raise at a $256M valuation.
